Eagles outscore Skyhawks from three-point range and at the line in win
WATERBURY, Conn. (November 30, 2014) – Post University handed Stonehill College, among teams receiving votes in the NABC Division II poll and ranked fourth in the D2SIDA East Regional poll, a second straight setback with a 73-65 decision in non-conference men's basketball action at Drubner Center this afternoon.
Freshman Matt Mareno (San Francisco, California/Assumption) led three Post players in double-figures with 15 points on 4-of-9 shooting from the field, while converting 7-of-9 free-throws, to go with nine rebounds, three assists and three blocked shots. Senior Nardie Bogues (Baltimore, Maryland/Rockhurst) added 12 points, aided by 6-for-6 shooting at the line, three rebounds, four assists and a steal, while freshman Travis Flagg (Queens, New York/Costal Academy) contributed ten points on 3-for-3 shooting from three-point range in 14 minutes off the bench. Junior David Seymour (Amityville, New York/Dean College) chipped in nine points, seven rebounds, two assists and a steal, while freshman Joseph Lockwood (London, England) registered eight points and nine boards.
Sophomore Ryan Logan (Fredericktown, Ohio/Fredericktown) led Stonehill with a game and season-high 21 points on 8-of-16 shooting from the field, including 5-for-6 from three-point range, six rebounds, three assists and two steals. Senior Jack Cole (New Providence, New Jersey/New Providence) added 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting, including 1-for-1 from three, and six rebounds. Junior Daniel Brix (Monroe Township, New Jersey/St. Joseph) chipped in ten points off the bench on 4-of-5 shooting, including 1-for-1 from deep, and two rebounds. Classmate Carter Smith (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) dished out a season-high seven assists for the Skyhawks.

Post used 42.3-percent (11-for-26) shooting from three-point range, including 7-for-16 (43.8%) in the second half, to key the win, outscoring Stonehill 16-6 from the free-throw line as the Eagles converted 16-of-19 (84.2%) from the line on the day. The Eagles finished shooting 37.7% (23-61) from the field overall and posted a 43-34 rebounding advantage. Stonehill connected on 42.4-percent (25-for-59) of its shots from the field, including 9-of-24 (37.5%) from beyond the arc, while converting 6-of-11 (54.5%) free-throw attempts.
Stonehill jumped out to a quick 13-2 lead three minutes into the first half after a three-pointer from Cole. Logan also drained a triple to open the half, while junior Josh Heyliger (Queens, New York/The Hill School) scored five points, including a three, during the opening stretch. Post pulled back within a point (16-15) after a jumper from junior Nick Lawson (Woodbury, New Jersey/Gloucester CC) with 12 minutes to play in the opening half.
Cole put Stonehill back up three (18-15) just past the midpoint of the first half and then Seymour gave Post its first lead (19-18) with 8:44 to play in the half. Mareno put the Eagles ahead three (29-26) with 2:38 remaining and then settled for a one point lead (29-28) at the intermission.
Post opened the second half with an 11-2 run over the first five minutes of the second half to open a ten point lead (40-30) after a layup by Mareno. Bogues and junior Brandt Voiles (Byron, Illinois/Rock Valley) sparked the run with three-pointers.
Stonehill followed with an 18-2 run to reclaim the lead and run it to six (48-42) after a triple by freshman Isaiah Bess (LaGrange, Maine/Hampden Academy) with 9:43 to play. Brix scored the first ten points of the stretch for the Skyhawks, while Logan added a three-pointer as well.
Post evened the score (50-50) on a Malik Howze (Detroit, Michigan/University of Detroit Jesuit) three-pointer with 6:35 remaining. After Heyliger converted two free-throws to put Stonehill back in from at the other end, the Eagles scored the next 11 points to regain their nine point lead (61-52) with a layup from Lockwood with 3:39 on the clock. Flagg and Seymour both buried three-pointers to key the run to put Post in control.
Logan answered initially with a three-pointer at the other end to draw Stonehill within six (61-55) with 2:49 to go, but Post scored the next six points to seal the victory. The Eagles converted all ten free-throw attempts in the final minute, while Stonehill went nearly two and a half minutes without a field goal, to clinch the win for the hosts.
Stonehill (4-2, 2-1 NE-10) is back in action on Wednesday when it visits Assumption College for a Northeast-10 Conference matchup at 7:30 p.m. The Skyhawks return home on Wednesday, December 10, to host Saint Anselm College at 7:30 p.m. Post (2-3, 1-1 CACC) hosts Felician College on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
