Palmer makes 35 saves to lift Skyhawks
PLYMOUTH, N.H. (November 7, 2015) – The Stonehill College men's ice hockey team posted a 3-1 victory over Plymouth State University in non-conference action tonight at the Hanaway Rink.
Seniors Thomas DePoalo (Mendham, New Jersey/Morristown Beard School), Tom Jenkins (Canton, Massachusetts/Williston Northampton) and sophomore Tommy Newton (Hollis, New Hampshire/Portland Jr. Pirates USPHL- Premier) provided the offense for Stonehill this evening with a goal apiece, while freshman netminder William Palmer (Cranston, Rhode Island/Boston Bandits - EHL) made 35 saves in 36 opportunities between the pipes.
Freshman Colby Lanceleve (Stewiacke, Nova Scotia/Truro Bearcats) scored Plymouth State's lone goal, while freshman goaltender Evan Morelli (Reading, Massachusetts/Boston Junior Rangers) made 16 saves in net.
Depoalo opened the scoring for Stonehill 16:01 into the first stanza, when he collected a pass from Army on the power play and snuck a shot past Morelli to give him his first goal on the season. The Skyhawks doubled its lead 14:47 into the second period after Jacques initial shot was stopped by Morelli, and Jenkins gathered the puck and fired a shot into the net to give him his second goal of the early season.
Plymouth State's Lanceleve cut into the Stonehill lead just 43 seconds later. Palmer stopped a flurry of shots before the Stewiacke, Nova Scotia native potted his second goal of the season, hammering a shot past Palmer and sending the home team into the intermission with momentum.
Plymouth State turned up the pressure in the third period, pushing for the equalizing goal. Palmer stood tall in net, turning away 12 shots on the period to maintain Stonehill's one goal advantage. Desperate to send the game into overtime, the Panthers pulled its goalie with 49 seconds remaining to give them a man advantage on the attack. Newton took advantage of the empty net and guided the puck into the net to secure the win for the Skyhawks, 3-1.
Stonehill (2-0-1, 1-0-0 NE-10) is back in action Wednesday night, when the Skyhawks travel to Dudley, Massachusetts to take on the Bison of Nichols College at 8:10 p.m. Plymouth State (1-1-0, 0-0-0 MASCAC) will remain at home and host UMass Dartmouth on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
