Skyhawks roll to fourth straight win
EASTON, Mass. (April 9, 2015) – Stonehill College, ranked ninth in the first NCAA Division II East Regional ranking of the year released on Wednesday, swept three doubles matches on its way to a 7-2 victory against Assumption College in Northeast-10 Conference men's tennis action at Brown-Billone Tennis Club tonight.
Seniors Jared Drzal (West Sayville, New York/Sayville) and Jon Sanders (Holbrook, New York/St. Anthony's) as well as freshman Nikolay Lisichenok (Danvers, Massachusetts/Danvers) led Stonehill to its fourth straight win as double-winners on the night. Drzal and freshman Tom Buckley (Hebron, Connecticut/RHAM) combined to lead a sweep of the three doubles matches with an 8-6 victory at No. 3 doubles. Drzal followed with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Assumption junior Viljami Rahnasto (Vantaa, Finland) at No. 3 singles.
Sanders teamed up with senior Tom Alaimo (North Andover, Massachusetts/Central Catholic) for an 8-1 win at No. 2 singles for Stonehill. Sanders followed that up with a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 5 singles against sophomore Casey Hodor (Wickford, Rhode Island). Lisichenok and freshman Thomas Bellio (Saint Joseph, Michigan/Saint Joseph) cruised to an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles and then Lisichenok rolled to a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 4 singles against Jakob Zylak (Dunbarton, New Hampshire/Coe-Brown). Senior Philip Klados (Lake Forest, California/Santa Margarita Catholic Prep) chipped in a point for the Skyhawks with a 6-1, 6-0 decision at No. 6 singles against sophomore Tom Knight (Wilbraham, Massachusetts/Minnechaug Regional).
Sophomores Chris Wang (Bolton, Connecticut/East Catholic) and Marco Leung (Macao) earned Assumption's points with wins in singles play. Waung battled past Bellio for a 7-6 (7-3), 6-2 victory at No. 1 singles, while Leung grinded out a 7-6 (7-3), 4-6, 10-5 decision over Alaimo at No. 2.
Stonehill (11-4, 6-1 NE-10) returns to action on Saturday when it visits Saint Michael's College for a Northeast-10 match at The EDGE in South Burlington, Vermont, at noon. The Skyhawks return home on Sunday to host University of the Sciences in Philadelphia at Charles Watt Tennis Courts at 1 p.m. Assumption (5-7, 2-2 NE-10) hosts American International College on Saturday at 1 p.m.
