EASTON, Mass. (September 12, 2012) – The Stonehill College women's soccer team earned its third-straight victory of the season as the Skyhawks defeated Saint Michael's College, 2-1, in overtime Northeast-10 Conference (NE-10) action on Wednesday evening at Skyhawk Field.
Sophomore midfielder Christine Moodie (Littleton, Mass./Littleton) notched the game-winner at the 98:45 mark as she one-timed a pass from classmate Renee Trudeau (Pembroke, Mass./Pembroke) into the top left corner of the net over the dive of Purple Knights goalkeeper Kaylee Sullivan (East Greenwich, R.I./East Greenwich) for her third marker of the season.
Saint Michael's tied up the contest at 1-1 in the 88th minute on a free kick goal from sophomore midfielder Carley Pestana (Bedford, N.H./Bedford). After the Purple Knights were awarded a free kick just outside Stonehill's box, Pestana roofed the ensuing chance into the top right corner of the net for her first tally of the season.
Trudeau gave the Skyhawks an early 1-0 advantage in the 12th minute as she gathered a pass sent over the top of Saint Michael's defense from Moodie, sprinted into the box and finessed a shot into the lower left corner of the net, her second of the year.
Junior goalkeeper Amy Wheaton (Dartmouth, Mass./Dartmouth) turned away six shots in net for Stonehill. Wheaton, who posted back-to-back shutouts before today's contest, saw her scoreless streak end at 267 minutes and 24 seconds. Sullivan made four stops in the loss.
Saint Michael's outshout Stonehill, 18-13, while the Skyhawks won the corners matchup, 6-1.
Stonehill (3-0-0, 2-0-0 NE-10) returns to action on Saturday, September 15 as the Skyhawks travel to Le Moyne College for an NE-10 tilt scheduled for noon. Saint Michael's (0-3-1, 0-1-1 NE-10) visits Assumption College on Saturday at 4 p.m.
