Skyhawks edge Hawks 6-5 on penalty kicks after playing to a 1-1 double-overtime draw
WORCESTER, Mass. (September 6, 2013) – The Stonehill College women's soccer team advanced to tomorrows inaugural Catholic Cup championship in a penalty shootout after playing to a 1-1 double overtime draw with Saint Anselm College at Assumption College's Multi-Sport Stadium this afternoon.
Senior midfielder Casey Matthews (Mattapoisett, Mass./Old Rochester Regional) tallied the first goal of the season for Stonehill, beating Saint Anselm goalkeeper Gabriella Primera (Kennett Square, Pa./Unionville) in the 46th minute to stake the Skyhawks to a 1-0 lead. They would hold that lead until the 79th minute, when the Hawks got the equalizer from Alexa Lucci (Hope, R.I./The Prout School) following a corner kick from Rachel Gillies (Auburn, Mass./Auburn).
Each team would have one final opportunity to win the game in regulation, as Primera stopped a shot from Maddie Manning (Weymouth, Mass./Weymouth) in the 79th minute, and Gillies attempted another corner kick in the 87th minute. The teams would play through two scoreless overtime periods before Stonehill prevailed 6-5 in penalty kicks.
Senior captain Amy Wheaton (Dartmouth, Mass./Dartmouth) was impressive in net, making eight saves and shutting the Hawks out through the two overtime sessions, including a save in the 99th minute. Her counterpart, Primera, also had a solid game, stopping seven shots.
Stonehill (0-0-1) is back in action tomorrow at 3 p.m., when they take on host Assumption (1-0) for the Catholic Cup championship. Saint Anselm and Saint Michael's square off in the consolation match at noon. Assumption topped Saint Michael's 2-0 in today's other match
