Skyhawk middle-distance athletes lead the way


BOSTON, Mass. (December 5, 2009) - The Stonehill College women's indoor track and field team opened its 2009-10 season at the Jay Carisella Invitational, hosted by Northeastern University, at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center today.

Stonehill was led by top-ten finishes in its middle-distance events today. Sophomore Susan O'Connell (East Greenwich, R.I./East Greenwich) placed fourth (out of 21 competitors) in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:21.24, while classmate Vlada Shelkova (Newington, Conn./Newington) finished ninth in 2:28.24. Sophomore Christen Carrier (Manchester, N.H./Manchester Central) turned in an eight-place finish (out of 40 competitors) in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:01.13. Senior Kathryn O'Leary (Rensselaer, N.Y./Columbia) finished ninth in the 500-meter dash in 1:21.97.

Sophomore Kristen Mahoney (Weymouth, Mass./Weymouth) placed tenth in the 5000-meter run with a time of 19.27.33.

Sophomore Erica Insel (Clinton, N.J./Voorhees) took 11th place in the shot put with a distance of 34-feet, 7.75-inches.

Freshman Olivia Dyson (Reading, Mass./Reading Memorial) finished 12th in the high jump with a jump of 4-feet, 9.75-inches.

Sophomore Maura Ferrarini (Springfield, Mass./Springfield Cathedral) finished 14th in the 3000-meter run with a time of 11:19.77.

Shelkova placed 15th in the long jump with a leap of 15-feet, 8.25-inches.

Freshman Alexis Monahan (Swoyersville, Pa./Holy Redeemer) placed 18th in the mile with a time of 5:36.00.

Senior Meghan Rocha (Nashua, N.H./Bishop Guertin) placed 20th in the weight throw with a throw of 34-feet, 9.75-inches.

Junior Angela Miller (Brockton, Mass./Brockton) placed 45th (out of 89 competitors) in the 200-meter dash in 28.66-seconds, followed closely by freshman Sarah Burke (South Yarmouth, Mass./Dennis Yarmouth) in 29.08 for 47th.

Freshmen Katie Bernazzani (Norwood, Mass./Norwood) and Burke finished 14th and 15th in the 55-meter hurdles prelims with times of 9.16 and 9.19-seconds, respectively.

Dyson placed 23rd in the preliminaries of the 55-meter dash in 7.67-seconds.

Stonehill is back in action next Saturday at the Harvard University Invitational held at the Gordon Indoor Track in Cambridge.
