Stonehill Takes Third at Wheaton Invitational

distance relay team all victorious for Skyhawks
Rocha sets school record in weight throw
NORTON, Mass. (January 23, 2010) - The Stonehill College women's indoor track and field team returned to action for the first time in over a month and posted a third-place finish at the Wheaton College Invitational held at the Haas Athletic Center today.
Stonehill compiled 81 points, bettered only by team champion Williams College (163.66) and runners up Tufts University (103).
Senior Meghan Rocha (Nashua, N.H./Bishop Guertin) set a new school record in the weight throw to place sixth overall in the event with a distance of 11.98-meters (39'3.72"). She bettered her own previous record of 38'7" set at the Northeast-10 Championships last February.
Freshman Jessica Jarrard (Shrewsbury, Mass./Hudson Catholic) won a 5000-meter event dominated by Stonehill runners with a time of 18:14.02 - 13.76-seconds quicker than the second place runner. Five Skyhawks placed in the top ten as freshman Lynley Joynt (Guilderland, N.Y./Guilderland) finished third in 18:35.68, followed by classmate Kristen Veit (Easthampton, Mass./Holyoke Catholic) in sixth in 19:12.19. Sophomore Jill Alves (Whitman, Mass./Whitman-Hanson) placed seventh in 19:12.49, followed closely by freshman Caroline McBride (North Reading, Mass./North Reading) in eighth in 19:13.78.
Junior Lindsey Pinkham (Skowhegan, Maine/Skowhegan Area) won the 800-meter run in her first event of the season with a time of 2:23.44. Sophomore Susan O'Connell (East Greenwich, R.I./East Greenwich) placed third in the event with a time of 2:24.54.
Stonehill's distance relay team took first place with a time of 13:07.39, winning the event by 6.04 seconds. The Skyhawks finished second in the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 4:12.80.

Freshman Kathryn Bernazzani (Norwood, Mass./Norwood) placed second in the 55-meter high hurdles with a time of 8.82-seconds in the final after qualifying with a time of 9.00-seconds flat to win her qualifying heat. She finished 11th in the triple jump with a distance of 9.90-meters (32'5.76").
Freshman Erin Carmone (Riverside, R.I./East Providence), competing in her first collegiate indoor event after an All-America season with the cross country team, finished third in the mile with a time of 5:16.13. She led three Skyhawks in the top ten as sophomore Kristen Mahoney (Weymouth, Mass./Weymouth) placed eighth in 5:38.92, while classmate Maura Ferrarini (Springfield, Mass./Springfield Cathedral) took tenth in 5:41.36.
Freshman Sarah Burke (South Yarmouth, Mass./Dennis-Yarmouth) finished third in the 55-meter high hurdles with a time of 9.28-seconds in the final after qualifying with a time of 9.18-seconds to win her heat.
Freshman Olivia Dyson (Reading, Mass./Reading Memorial) finished fourth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 28.29-seconds - good enough to win her heat. She placed tenth in the high jump with a height of 1.48-meters (4'10.32") and took 12th in the 55-meter dash with a time of 7.75-seconds.
Sophomore Vlada Shelkova (Newington, Conn./Newington) placed fifth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 28.32-seconds. She finished sixth in the long jump with a distance of 5.01-meters (16'5.28") and took tenth in the triple jump with a distance of 9.97-meters (32'8.52").
Senior Kathryn O'Leary (Rensselaer, N.Y./Columbia) finished fifth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:01.58. Sophomore Christen Carrier (Manchester, N.H./Manchester Central) took ninth in the event with a time of 1:02.74.
Sophomore Erica Insel (Clinton, N.J./Voorhees) placed seventh in the shot put with a throw of 10.57-meters (34'8.16").
Stonehill is back in action next weekend with a pair of events, starting Friday at the Reebok Collegiate Indoor Games at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center as well as Saturday's BU Terrier Classic at the Boston University Track & Tennis Center.
