NEWTON, Mass. (October 17, 2023) – The Stonehill College men's soccer team took down Boston College, 2-1, on a cold and rainy Tuesday night. The Skyhawks win marked the program and school's first win over an Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) opponent.
Highlights
- The win marked the Northeast Conference's (NEC) first win over an ACC school since Robert Morris defeated the University of Pittsburgh, 2-0, on September 13, 2016.
- Senior captain Jacob Woznicki scored his team-leading eighth goal of the season and fifth in the last three games for Stonehill.
- Senior defender Ekrem Hadzic scored his first goal of the season which proved to be the game winner.
- Freshman goalkeeper Kyle Tencza earned his first collegiate victory in net for the Skyhawks after stopping three shots on the night.
- Sophomore Augustine Boadi scored the lone goal for Boston College in the first half.
- Redshirt-junior Brennan Klein got the start in net for the Eagles and stopped five of the seven shots he faced.
How it Happened
- Boston College got the scoring started early after an end line cross back into the box from freshman Xavier O'Neil found the boot of Boadi who scored the games opening goal at the 7:49 mark of the contest.
- Stonehill found a way to respond in the 32nd minute after sophomore Benjamin Mazza-Bergeron rocketed a shot from 25-yards out that found the head of Woznicki, redirecting the shot and knotting the game at one apiece.
- The Skyhawks nearly took their first lead of the match in the 43rd minute, however, a goal scored would be waved off due to an offside call, sending the game to halftime with the score tied at 1-1.
- Both sides would battle back and forth through the opening 30 minutes of the second half, until freshman Martin Johnsen almost gave Stonehill a lead in the 75th minute with a point-blank shot from within the box. However, the Eagles goalkeeper would stop the Skyhawks scoring opportunity to keep the match locked at one apiece.
- Continuing to apply offensive zone pressure, the Skyhawks were awarded a corner kick in the 82nd that bounced around the goal line and was eventually put in the back of the net off the head of Hadzic, giving Stonehill its first lead of the contest.
- Tencza came up clutch late, stopping back-to-back point-blank shots in the 86th minute, keeping Boston College off the board in the second half and preserving the 2-1 victory in favor of the Skyhawks.
