Big Plays Spark Wagner Past Football

Three of four Seahawk touchdowns come on plays over 20-yards, including pair of Spruill scores

EASTON, Mass. (October 5, 2024) – Wagner College capitalized on 430 yards of total offense, posting three big score plays, on its way to a 28-7 victory over Stonehill College in a Northeast Conference football matchup on Timothy J. Coughlin, '80 Memorial Field at W.B. Mason Stadium this afternoon.

Postgrad Jake Cady tossed three touchdown passes and senior running back Rickey Spruill scored touchdowns on the ground and via the air to lead Wagner to the victory. Spruill finished with a game-high 132 all-purpose yards, including 103 rushing yards on 14 carries and a touchdown while adding 29 yards on two catches with a score. Three of Cady's six completions on the night went for touchdowns, totaling 208 total yards with 168 passing yards on 6-of-14 attempts and the three scores. Spruill rushed for a game-high 103 yards and a touchdown, adding another on two receptions for 29 yards and score.

Postgrad Andre Hines, Jr. added another 16 carries for 71 yards for Wagner in accumulating 262 rushing yards as a team. Postgrad Justin Reilly paced a Wagner defense that limited Stonehill to 192 yards and just the one touchdown with a game-high 12 tackles (ten solo), including a sack for a loss of ten yards, while fellow postgrad Jalin Justice added six stops (three solo), including 1.5 sacks for a loss of 12 yards and a forced fumble.

Senior Jarel Washington posted 96 all-purpose yards to lead Stonehill on the offensive side, rushing the ball 15 times for 60 yards to go with another 36 yards on two receptions. Classmate Ashur Carraha scored the lone Skyhawks touchdown with a 17-yard carry, while completing 15-of-29 passes for 140 yards, was intercepted once and sacked four times.

Junior Tyler Bannon paced the Stonehill defense by matching his career-high with nine tackles (seven solo), while freshman Christopher Williams added a season-high six stops (one solo), including 1.0 for a loss of a yard, and a forced fumble. Junior Jordan Irvine contributed seven tackles (all solo), including 2.0 for a loss of four, while juniors Jahnez Williams and Mo Seide each collected interceptions with three tackles apiece.

Wagner built a 14-point lead it would not relinquish before the game was 20-minutes old on its way to a 21-7 halftime lead. Facing first and 27 on its own 23 after 25 yards of penalties in consecutive plays Cady connected with sophomore Jeremiah Colclough for a 77-yard touchdown deep across the middle 6:08 into the game.

Wagner doubled its lead four plays into the second quarter as Cady hit Spruill for a 24-yard touchdown pass down the left side 86-seconds into the frame to cap a 55-yard drive that took eight plays. The Seahawks extended their lead to three touchdowns with a 19-yard Cady touchdown toss to postgrad Christian Tait on their next possession, which was sparked by a 36-yard Cady pass to sophomore Jaylen Bonelli on the first play from the Seahawks ten yard line.

Stonehill took advantage of great field position set up by a 35-yard kickoff return by sophomore Joshua Roberson to midfield to get on the scoreboard on the ensuing drive. Carraha capped the eight-play drive with a 17-yard touchdown scamper down the left side on second and 17 with 3:43 to play before the half. The Skyhawks had an excellent opportunity to get back within a touchdown heading to the locker room after an 18-yard punt out of bounds from Wagner put the hosts on the visitors 48 to start but was unable to find the endzone after a three and out that went eight yards backwards.

Stonehill was unable to take advantage of two Wagner turnovers in the second half before the Seahawks were able to seal the win with a 48-yard touchdown run by Spruill with five minutes to play in the fourth two plays after the Skyhawks turned the ball over on downs after driving to the Wagner 23.
