Fairfield Stops Field Hockey, 4-1

Stags clinch NEC Tournament bid, halt Skyhawks hopes in regular season finale

FAIRFIELD, Conn. (November 1, 2024) – Fairfield University clinched one of the two remaining spots for the upcoming Northeast Conference Tournament and halted Stonehill College's postseason aspirations with a 4-1 victory in NEC field hockey action on University Field this afternoon.

  • Senior Erin McGinley scored a pair of goals to seal the win for Fairfield.
  • Junior Alex Senior contributed a goal and assist for the Stags, while sophomore Noor Hellemans dished out two assists.

How It Happened
  • Fairfield built a two-goal lead off its three penalty corners in the contest, grabbing a quick advantage when Senior scored off an insertion and stop by Hofmann and junior Pilar Mengotti just 1:53 into the game.
  • Casteluchi added a goal off a corner insertion and stop by Hellemans and junior Alice Pifferi 31-seconds into the second half.
  • Stonehill sliced the Fairfield lead in half with a penalty corner goal of its own as D'Antonio potted her second goal of the year off a pass from freshman Siena De Roeck with 1:52 remaining in the third quarter.
  • Fairfield sealed the win and playoff bid with a pair of goals from McGinley in the fourth quarter. Her first came off a pass from Senior 4:40 into the fourth, before adding her second with five minutes remaining off a deflection, assisted by Hellemans.
Noteworthy
  • Stonehill finished its third NCAA Division I season with seven wins overall – two more than its 2022 total and improved by two wins in NEC play with four. The Skyhawks finished a game behind Saint Francis University (5-3) and LIU (5-3) for the final NEC Tournament spot – with those two teams holding the head-to-head tiebreaker against the Skyhawks.
  • Conte caps her collegiate field hockey career second all-time for career saves at Stonehill with 387. Her 163 saves in 2022 are a single-season program record.
  • Sophomore Tyra Stark finished as Stonehill's leading scorer this season with six goals and an assist for 13 points.
Up Next
Stonehill wraps up its season with a 7-11 record overall, including 4-4 in the NEC. Fairfield (10-7, 6-2 NEC) caps its regular season schedule at the University of Delaware on Sunday at 1 p.m., before opening NEC Tournament play next weekend.
