ORONO, Maine. (September 22, 2024) – The University of Maine rode a three-goal flurry in the second quarter to a 3-0 victory over Stonehill College in a non-conference field hockey matchup at the Maine Field Hockey Complex this afternoon.
Highlights
- Postgrad Victoria Tinghitella posted a goal and assist to lead the Maine scoring.
- Senior Poppy Lambert and sophomore Saylor Kuefler also scored goals for Maine.
- Sophomore Jayde Temby and postgrad Rozárie Mrázová combined to shut Stonehill out for the fifth-straight game. Mrázová made one save in the second half after Temby didn't make a save in a scoreless first half.
- Senior Shannon Conte stood tall in goal for Stonehill with a season-high 15 saves.

How It Happened
- Conte and the Stonehill defenders fended off a Maine attack that piled up 11 shots and seven penalty corners in the opening quarter. Conte made seven of her 15 stops in the first frame.
- Maine broke through midway through the second quarter on a penalty corner as Lambert scored her third goal of the season off a pass from Tinghitella following the insertion by junior Olivia Geniti 7:08 into the quarter.
- Lambert's goal sparked a decisive three-goal flurry for Maine over the next three minutes, as Kuefler doubled the Black Bears lead just 2:22 later off a feed from freshman Floor Dijkhuizen for her third goal of the year with 5:30 to play in the first half.
- Tinghitella rounded out the surge with her fourth goal of the season with 4:43 remaining in the half.
- Stonehill gained some momentum in the second half with four penalty corners, producing three shots, in the third quarter. The Skyhawks threatened to score and break its goal scoring drought at the end of the frame, but Maine postgrad Alexandra Sacker made a pair of impressive defensive stops in defense of a penalty corner with time in the frame expired to keep the visitors scoreless.
Noteworthy:
- The game marked a homecoming for the Stonehill coaching staff with head coach Danielle Aviani, '17 and assistant coach Mia Borley, '22 returning to face their alma mater for the first time coaching the Skyhawks.
- Conte's 15 saves mark her first double-figure save total of the season and 16th of her career in 41 career games.
