Fast Start Propels Stony Brook Past Football, 37-10

Dempster leads Seawolves rushing effort with 160 yards and three touchdowns

STONY BROOK, N.Y. (September 7, 2024) – Stony Brook University scored the game's first 23 points, including a pair of touchdowns in the opening four minutes of play, on its way to s 37-10 triumph over Stonehill College in a non-conference football matchup at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium this afternoon.

Redshirt senior running back Roland Dempster paced a Stony Brook rushing effort that posted 260 of its 421 yards of total offense with 160 yards on 19 carries with three touchdowns. Freshman quarterback Malachi Marshall completed 9-of-16 passes for 161 yards and a score.

Freshman defensive lineman Sebastian Regis paced the Stony Brook defense with three tackles (two solo), a sack for a loss of ten yards and a 69-yard fumble return for a touchdown that extended the Seawolves lead to 34 points. Redshirt senior A.J. Roberts finished with a team-high nine stops (two solo).

Senior quarterback Ashur Carraha led Stonehill with a career-high 306 total yards, completing 18-of-36 passes for 236 yards and a touchdown, while adding another 70 yards on ten carries on the ground. Junior tight end Cody Ruff caught six of those passes for a career-best 105 yards, while junior Cole Clarke caught the Skyhawks first touchdown of the season in his Skyhawks debut, shifting to tight end this season after two years as a backup quarterback. Junior Kyree Drake chipped in with a career-high 109 all-purpose, including a career-long 70-yard kickoff return that set up the Skyhawks touchdown.

Senior linebacker Matt DeVirgilio paced the Stonehill defense with a career-high 12 tackles, while classmate Vahn Friday contributed six stops (three solo), including 1.5 for a loss of three yards and a blocked kick.

Dempster scored on runs of 17 and 15 yards in the opening four minutes to stake Stony Brook to a quick 14-point lead. His first score capped a 6-play, 75-yard opening drive, before closing out a short 30-yard drive on two plays after Stonehill was unable to overcome a procedure penalty before its first offensive play.

Stony Brook stretched its lead to 17-0 with a 40-yard field goal from redshirt junior Enda Kirby with 6:43 remaining in the first quarter. The Seawolves lead grew to 23-0 at halftime when Marshall connected with redshirt senior tight end Cole Bunicci for a 63-yard touchdown with 2:10 to play in the half.

Stonehill got on the scoreboard with a ten-play, 71-yard drive on the opening possession of the second half, capped by a 21-yard field goal by senior Danny Hurley. Stony Brook broke the game open from there with Dempster's third touchdown of the afternoon on a three-yard run to cap an eight play, 75-yard drive with 7:52 left in the quarter prior to Regis' 69-yard fumble return two minutes later.

Clarke's first career touchdown on a three-yard toss from Carraha capped the scoring on the afternoon with 4:04 to play in the third.

Noteworthy
  • Carraha moved up to seventh on Stonehill's career passing list with 3,362 yards in 20 career games played. His 27 career touchdown passes rank sixth all-time.
  • Carraha surpassed 300 total yards for the first time in his career, while Ruff posted his first career 100-yard receiving game.
  • This afternoon marked the first meeting between the two programs since a 27-27 deadlock in Easton, Massachusetts, in 1990 with Stony Brook taking a 2-0-1 lead in a series that dates back to the two program's club eras of the mid-1980s.
  • Stonehill finished with 382 total yards, 21 first downs and held possession for 29:26.

Mason Stadium at 1 p.m. Stony Brook (1-1, 0-0 CAA) visits Fordham University for a non-conference battle next Saturday at 1 p.m.
