BOSTON, Mass. (April 16, 2025) – The Stonehill College softball team took on Boston University in a pair of non-conference matchups at the BU Softball Field on Wednesday, dropping the first game 10-2 before falling in the second, 6-0.
GAME 1 – Boston University 10 (27-13, 9-0 Patriot), Stonehill 2 (10-26, 2-10 NEC)
HOW IT HAPPENED
Stonehill went down 7-0 in the first three innings of play, sparked by a four-run first inning for the Terriers. BU had five singles in the first inning alone, before adding two more runs in the second on a single, triple, and sacrifice fly.
After the first two Stonehill batters went down in order in the top of the fourth, the Skyhawks started a two-out rally after senior
Shannon Conte (Amesbury, Mass.) was hit by a pitch, sophomore
Piper Hofmann (Windermere, Fla.) doubled down the left field line, and then junior
Jessica Brill (Natick, Mass.) drove in both runners with a single to center field to make the score 7-2. The Skyhawks would load the bases but BU got out of the inning with a strikeout to keep their five-run lead.
After a pair of scoreless innings, the Terriers added three runs in the bottom of the sixth to initiate the eight-run rule, winning the game 10-2 on an RBI single to left.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Redshirt junior May Dawes (Beacon Falls, Conn.) had a 2-2 day at the plate, extending her hit streak to five games while having a hit in eight of the last 10 games.
- Freshman Grace Conaway (St. Paul Park, Minn.) tallied a single to extend her hit streak to nine games.
- Brill has an RBI in back-to-back games as she led the team with two RBI this afternoon.
GAME 2 – Boston University 8 (28-13, 9-0 Patriot), Stonehill 0 (10-27, 2-10 NEC)
HOW IT HAPPENED
Despite being shutout, the Skyhawks had five hits, placing a runner in scoring position twice but they were unable to drive in the runners. Stonehill starter, sophomore
Alexa Hospodar (Old Bethpage, N.Y.) allowed just one Terrier to get on base through the first two innings.
BU loaded the bases in the third inning and were able to break up Hospodar's shutout, driving in two runs on a single to center before plating another on a groundout to the pitcher as the Terries went up 3-0.
A two-run double in the bottom of the fourth increased the BU lead and Hospodar was relieved by sophomore
Harper Sullivan (Glendale, Ariz.). One more run would come around to score on an RBI single to right as the Terriers led 6-0 after four.
After Sullivan held BU scoreless in the fifth, the Terrier offense started off the bottom of the sixth with three consecutive singles followed by a sacrifice fly to center and an RBI single through the right side of the infield to make the score 8-0, ending the game an inning early.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Brill recorded a hit for the third straight game while Hofmann tallied her team-leading eighth multi-hit game of the season as she went 2-2 with a pair of singles.
- BU had 13 hits in the win while the top three hitters in the Terrier lineup combined to go 7-9 with six RBI and a double.
