Softball Swept by Siena in Non-Conference Doubleheader on the Road

LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. (April 2, 2025) – The Stonehill College softball team dropped a pair of non-conference matchups on the road at the Siena Softball Field as the Saints won the first game 5-0 before winning the second 4-1.

GAME 1 – Siena 5 (16-14, 2-3 MAAC), Stonehill 0 (7-19, 0-6 NEC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
After a scoreless first inning, the Skyhawks had runners on second and third with one out in the inning but Siena starter Gracie Goewey struck out back-to-back batters to escape the inning unscathed.

Aside from two singles for the Saints in the bottom of the second, sophomore Alexa Hospodar (Old Bethpage, N.Y.) was lights out for the first four innings, holding Siena scoreless with two strikeouts.

The Skyhawks put runners on second and third in the top of the fifth inning with two outs but Goewey was able to force a fly out to left field to get out of another jam.

After both teams were held scoreless for four and a half innings, the Saints had four straight runners reach base with a two-RBI single giving Siena the first lead of the game. The next batter lifted a three-run home run over the center field fence as the Saint took a 5-0 lead.

Sophomore Harper Sullivan (Glendale, Ariz.) entered the game in relief of Hospodar, throwing 1.2 shutout innings to keep Stonehill within five heading into the seventh. The Skyhawks threatened with runners of second and third for the third time in the game, but Goewey maneuvered her way out of danger again, shutting out Stonehill, 5-0.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Hospodar falls to 2-5 on the year with 4.1 IP, six hits, and five runs allowed (four earned), striking out two and walking one.
  • Stonehill's lone hit came from freshman Melanie Snyder (Howard Beach, N.Y.) and she also had a stolen base.
  • Freshman Taylor Schoonmaker (Averill Park, N.Y.) drew a career-high two walks and stole a base.

GAME 2 – Siena 4 (17-14, 2-3 MAAC), Stonehill 1 (7-20, 0-6 NEC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
After picking up the win in the circle in the first game, Goewey led off the bottom of the first inning in the second game with a solo home run to left field.

Stonehill starter, junior Lauren Donovan (Marblehead, Mass.), settled in after the homer, not giving up a hit or walk until the fourth inning. This gave the Skyhawks the opportunity to tie the score in the top of the fourth after senior Paige Wodarski (Danvers, Mass.) ripped a single to right field, and Snyder followed it up with a double to put a runner on third. Redshirt junior May Dawes (Beacon Falls, Conn.) would bring the runner in from third with an RBI single through the right side of the infield as the Skyhawks tied the score, 1-1.

Siena broke the tie in the bottom of the fifth with a two-run home run to center field before adding an insurance run in the sixth inning on a throwing error by the catcher as the Saints led 4-1 heading into the seventh.

The Skyhawks brought the tying run to the plate with one out in the seventh, but Siena got a strikeout and a pop-up to third base to secure the win.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Despite only tallying one run, the Skyhawks had eight hits with Sullivan going 2-4 and Snyder recording the lone extra-base hit of the day with a two-bagger.
  • Donovan went 4.1 IP in the circle, allowing four hits and three runs while striking out three as she falls to 2-6 on the year.
  • Dawes drove in her fifth RBI of the season as she went 1-3 at the plate.
  • Snyder now has a hit in three straight games, the longest streak of her freshman campaign.
