EASTON, Mass. (April 5, 2025) – Sophomore
Harper Sullivan (Glendale, Ariz.) pitched a complete game and drove in a run at the plate to lead the Stonehill College softball team to a 4-3 win over Mercyhurst University in Northeast Conference play at Fr. Gartland Field on Saturday.
Stonehill 4 (9-21, 2-7 NEC), Mercyhurst 3 (3-23, 1-11 NEC)
HOW IT HAPPENED
Mercyhurst opened the scoring in the top of the first after back-to-back singles moved a runner up to third base before coming in on a sacrifice fly to center field. The Lakers doubled their lead to 2-0 in the top of the third when
Jaz Sanders hit a home run over the right field fence.
Stonehill was held scoreless up until the bottom of the fourth when freshman
Melanie Snyder (Howard Beach, N.Y) led off the half inning with a home run to dead center field to cut the deficit in half, 2-1. Freshman
Grace Conaway (St. Paul Park, Minn.) followed up the homer with a single and scored from second on an RBI single from Sullivan that tied the game up at 2-2.
The Skyhawk offense didn't let up in the fourth as senior
Shannon Conte (Amesbury, Mass.) lined career-hit number 98 down the left field line for a two-RBI double as Stonehill took a 4-2 lead.
Mercyhurst responded in the sixth inning with consecutive base hits to begin the frame that resulted in both base runners landing in scoring position, with one coming across on a wild pitch to make the score 4-3. Snyder fielded a sharply hit ground ball at short and threw out the tying runner at the plate to help Sullivan escape the inning with only one run allowed.
The Lakers had the tying run at third base in the seventh inning but Sullivan struck out the final batter of the game to pitch a complete game and secure the 4-3 NEC win for the Skyhawks.
