Softball Sweeps Rhode Island in High-Scoring Doubleheader

KINGSTON, R.I. (May 1, 2025) – The Stonehill College softball team won both games against the University of Rhode Island at the URI Softball Complex in a non-conference doubleheader on Thursday.

GAME 1 – Stonehill 8 (15-34, 5-13 NEC), Rhode Island 6 (13-34, 6-16 A10)

HOW IT HAPPENED
The first three batters of the game reached base for the Skyhawks with sophomore Piper Hofmann (Windermere, Fla.) drawing a walk, freshman Grace Conaway (St. Paul Park, Minn.) ripping a double down the right field line, and sophomore Harper Sullivan (Glendale, Ariz.) driving in Hofmann with an RBI single to shallow left field. Senior Isabella Therrien (Auburn, Mass.) drove in the second Stonehill run of the first inning with a sacrifice bunt to the pitcher.

URI responded in the bottom half of the first, reaching base with its first five batters of the game on an error, walk, and three consecutive singles to even up the score at 2-2. A sacrifice fly to center field gave the Rams a 3-2 lead, and a ground out to the pitcher brought in one more run as Rhode Island led 4-2 at the end of the first.

Senior Shannon Conte (Amesbury, Mass.) led off the second with a single to center and Emily Nardelli (North Attleboro, Mass.) followed that up with a double down the left field line to drive in pinch runner, freshman Jenny Olson (Salem, N.H.) after she stole second to get into scoring position.

Conaway and Sullivan walked and got hit by a pitch to load the bases, and Therrien came through with a single past the third baseman to drive in both Nardelli and Conaway to give the Skyhawks a 5-4 lead. Junior Jessica Brill (Natick, Mass.) added one more in the top of the second with an RBI single to left field that drove in Sullivan.

URI rattled off three consecutive singles to start the bottom of the third, and after a lineout to right, the Rams tallied three more singles, scoring two runs in the inning to tie the game at 6-6.

Therrien singled with two outs in the fourth, and Brill came through with an RBI double to right field to give Stonehill a 7-6 lead.

In the top of the fifth, Conte drew a walk and pinch runner, freshman Taylor Schoonmaker (Averill Park, N.Y.), scored on a single to center field by Hofmann as the Skyhawks increased their lead to 8-6.

Sullivan took over in the circle for the Skyhawks, shutting down the Rams for 4.1 innings to secure the 8-6 win.

GAME 2 – Final/8 Stonehill 7 (16-34, 5-13 NEC), Rhode Island 5 (13-35, 6-16 A10)

HOW IT HAPPENED
Stonehill started the second game in Kingston with a pair of singles before a fielder's choice moved Hofmann over to third before Therrien drove her in on a groundout to first base to put Stonehill in front 1-0.

After three consecutive scoreless innings, URI got on the board in the bottom of the fourth after putting runners on the corners, plating the one from third base with a single to left to tie the game at 1-1.

Conaway broke the tie in the fifth inning with a single to right centerfield after Hofmann ripped a two-out single down the line and stole second to put herself in scoring position.

In the bottom of the fifth, a pair of walks for the Rams put a runner on second base that would be waved in to score on a fielder's choice in the infield.

Stonehill tallied a pair of singles with two outs in the top of the sixth before a throwing error allowed junior Natalie Bottiglieri (Massapequa, N.Y.) and Schoonmaker to score and give Stonehill a 4-2 lead.

The Rams rallied back in the bottom of the sixth, loading the bases before a single and a sacrifice fly drove in the tying runs to make it 4-4 heading into the seventh.

Hofmann led off the top of the seventh with a triple but was unable to score, followed by Sullivan keeping the Rams off the board in the bottom half of the inning to send the game into extra innings.

Stonehill loaded the bases in the top of the eighth, and Conaway came to the plate, working the Rhode Island hurler to a full count before ripping a single into the right center field gap to clear the bases and give Stonehill a 7-4 lead.

Sullivan gave up a leadoff single in the bottom of the eighth but struck out the next batter, and after one run came across on an obstruction call, the Skyhawks turned a 5-2-3 double play to end the game with a 7-5 victory.
