Easton, Mass. - Late in the
second half Sabrina Cataldo (Saugus, Mass.) broke
a scoreless tie with her first goal of the season against
UMass-Lowell (10-7-1, 8-3-3 NE-10). The Skyhawks end a
two-game losing skid and improve to 8-6-2 (8-3-2 in the
Northeast-10).
Defenses traded possessions throughout the first half.
UMass-Lowell sophomore goalie, Jamie Gillis turned away six Skyhawk
shots on goal. Senior goalkeeper Alex
Eckhardt (Marshfield, Mass.) also denied six shots on her
way to registering Stonehill's fifth shutout of 2007.
The score remained tied until late in the second half.
With two minutes remaining Caitlin McEvily (New
Rochelle, N.Y.) floated the ball in front of the River Hawks'
goal. Cataldo jumped and deflected the ball past Gillis.
The score was Cataldo's first since Stonehill's 2006 match up
with Bentley. Sabrina set the tone for that game coming off the
bench and scoring early. The Skyhawks would go on to beat
Bentley, 8-0.
Saturday's win was particularly special because of Senior Day.
For Lauren Boyd (Sandwich, Mass),
Hilary Eckhardt (Marshfield, Mass.),
Ashley Bourne (Brockton, Mass.), Meghan
O'Brien (Stow, Mass.), Erin McLaughlin
(Norwoord, Mass.), and Alex Eckhardt today marked their last home
game at Stonehill College.
The women's next two games will be on the road at Assumption on
Tuesday and Friday at Bridgeport.
