Easton, Mass. - A back and forth affair between
Stonehill and Adelphi ended when Panther freshman Jessica Baisley
(Shoreham-Wading, N.Y.) nailed home her first collegiate goal 8:48
in to the first overtime giving Adelphi a thrilling 4-3 overtime
win in the season opener for the Skyhawks.
The Panthers came out of the gate firing, scoring the first goal
in 21 seconds, when senior Jacki Walsh (Ronkonkoma, N.Y) slipped
the opening possession into Stonehill's net. Stonehill senior
Meghan O'Brien (Stow, Mass.) blasted home a goal to tie the score
shortly after and the Skyhawks took the lead 31:38 into the game
when O'Brien kicked in another goal off Hilary Eckhardt's
(Marshfield, Mass.) perfect placed throw-in.
The scoring continued when Adelphi sophomore Caitlin Morrison
(Beacon, N.Y), tied the game in the 38th minute. Both
teams were desperate to score before the half and with one minute
remaining Stonehill struck via the trio of Hilary Eckhardt, Kirstie
St. Martin (Lincoln, R.I) and Lauren Boyd (Sandwich, Mass) who
executed a perfect throw-in, assist, and score.
Alex Eckhardt (Marshfield, Mass.) made seven saves in a
valiant effort, but midway through the second half Adelphi freshman
Brianne McDonnell (Commack, N.Y) tied the game with an open net
sending the match into overtime, which set up Baisley's
heroics.
The Skyhawks (0-1) begin NE-10 play Wednesday at 4:00pm, when
they host Bryant.
