Easton Mass. - The Stonehill
women's soccer team ended a three-game winless streak, shutting out
the Assumption Greyhounds 3-0 behind freshman Alexandra
Murphy (Weymouth, Mass.) and sophomore Kirstie St.
Martin (Providence, R.I.).
The Skyhawks came out firing in the first half, putting four
shots on goal in the first five minutes. Their persistence
would be rewarded in the 14th minute when Murphy took a
feed from St. Martin and fired it home for her third goal on the
season and a 1-0 lead.
Stonehill continued the offensive pressure with Murphy scoring
her second goal of the game seven minutes later, as the Skyhawks
went into the half leading 2-0.
The Greyhounds put some shots on goal in the second half,
but were denied by freshman keeper Sarah Hickey
(Lee, Mass.). The Skyhawks responded to the pressure by
putting the game out of reach when Kirstie St. Martin took a pass
from Kelsey Mahoney in the 77th minute and tapped it
right by the Assumption keeper Lauren Keeting for her third goal on
the season and a 3-0 lead.
Assumption closest chance to score came in the last minute as
Hickey made a diving save on a breakaway by Kirsten Chirichetti.
The freshman had seven save to earn the first win of her career
with the 3-0 victory.
With the win Stonehill improves to 2-2-1 while the Greyhounds
fall to 2-3. The Skyhawks return to action when play host to
Pace at Skyhawk field on Wednesday, September 17 at 4:00.
