Easton, Mass.
- The Skyhawks used a strong first half defense
and accurate shooting to beat the Pace Setters 3-1 at Skyhawk field
on Wednesday.
Stonehill wasted no time in taking the lead, as sophomore
Kirstie St. Martin (Providence, R.I.) scored on a
cross from freshman Kelsey Mahoney (Rehoboth,
Mass.) just 37 seconds into the contest for a 1-0 lead.
The Skyhawks remained on the offensive, firing 14 more first
half shots while not allowing a single Setter shot on goal.
Freshman Alexandra Murphy (Weymouth, Mass.)
extended the lead with only two minutes remaining in the half on a
shot from the left side of the 18.
Stonehill continued to attack early in the second half, however
it was Pace who would get on the board, with Dania D'Allessandro
scoring on a shot from just inside the 18 to make it a one goal
match seven minutes into the second half.
The match remained 2-1 until the 78th minute when
Kelly Regan (Mansfield, Mass.) took a long pass
from Aimee Terreri (Guilford, Conn.) and
pushed it by keeper Breanna Gault for her first goal of the season
and a 3-1 lead.
Gault was tough in net for the Setters stopping 15 Skyhawk shots
while freshman Sarah Hickey (Lee, Mass.) had two
saves for Stonehill.
The win moves the Skyhawks to 3-2-1 on the season while Pace
falls to 1-3 on the year. Stonehill next travels to
Manchester to take on St. Anselm on Saturday, September 20 at noon.
