Junior Aimee Drainville
(Rockville, R.I./Chariho) led Assumption with eight kills,
while senior Kelly Blumenauer (Islip Terrace, N.Y./East
Islip) dished out 20 assists to go with four assists,
three kills and a block assist. Freshman Steph Whooten
(Norton, Mass./Bishop Feehan) chipped in with ten digs and
three service aces.
A Whooten service ace knotted set
one at 22-22, but Stonehill recovered to win the final three points
on an Assumption attack error and back-to-back Noonan kills. The
final three-point margin matched the largest for either team in the
opening frame. The Greyhounds held a 12-9 advantage in the second
set after two-straight Skyhawk hitting errors - one on a block from
sophomore Kristen Lamoureux (Dover, N.H./St. Thomas
Aquinas). However, Stonehill recovered with five-straight
points, two off Huselton kills, to regain the lead (14-12) and
never relinquished it in the set again.
Stonehill used a 10-1 run to turn
an early 3-1 deficit in set three into a commanding 11-4 advantage
on its way to sealing the victory. Huselton posted five kills
during the run, while Wirth served up three-straight aces during a
later stretch that pushed the Skyhawks lead to 16-5.
