EASTON, Mass. (October 17,
2009) - Adelphi University, ranked fourth in the first
NCAA Division II East Regional rankings released this week, picked
up its tenth-straight win with a 3-0 (25-22, 25-18, 25-23) victory
over Stonehill College, ranked fifth in the region, in Northeast-10
Conference volleyball action at Merkert Gymnasium this afternoon.
Junior setter Heather Mau
(Honolulu, Hawaii/Maryknoll) engineered a balanced
offensive effort for Adelphi with 43 assists to go with 12 digs and
four service aces. Senior Kelsey Hackett (Alta Loma,
Calif./Los Osos) posted 13 kills with just four errors on
22 total attacks for a .409 hitting percentage, while junior
Hilary Pavels (North Woodmere, N.Y./Valley Stream
South) added a double-double effort of ten kills and 13
digs.
Freshman Chelsea Overholt
(Centreville, Va./Flint Hill School) chipped in eight
kills with just one error and three blocks (two solo). Senior
Amy Williams (Bloomington, Ind./Bloomington North)
contributed a match-high 19 digs.
Junior Erin Johnson had nine kills with no errors for the
Skyhawks.

Sophomore Laura Huselton
(Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) led Stonehill with a match-high
15 digs with only one hitting error on 36 total attacks for a .389
hitting percentage to go with 12 digs and two blocks. Junior
Erin Johnson (Centerville, Mass./Barnstable) added
nine kills with no errors on 27 attacks for a .333 hitting
percentage, while sophomore Michelle Thornhill (Canyon
Lake, Calif./Temescal Canyon) posted eight kills and a
team-best 15 digs.
Junior setter Andrea Wirth
(Mesa, Ariz./St Mary's) dished out 31 assists for the
Skyhawks, while classmate Justine Thompson (Merrimack,
N.H./Bishop Guertin) chipped in 12 digs.
Adelphi won a tight first set by
scoring the final three points. Hackett and senior Audrey
Goss (Birmingham, Ala./Oak Mountain) posted kills and the
Panthers closed the set out with a Stonehill attack error. Trailing
12-11 in the second set, Adelphi rallied with an 8-0 run to take
command 19-12 after a Goss kill. Mau served up three aces during
that stretch as she was on serve for seven-straight points.
Adelphi hit .306 as a team and
never trailed in the third set to close out the victory and remain
perfect in NE-10 play this season. Two-straight kills from junior
Laura Noonan (Hampstead, N.H./Bishop Guertin) drew
the Skyhawks within 24-23 after they had trailed by as much as four
points as late as 20-16. However the last ditch rally stalled there
when Pavels closed out the set with a kill.
Stonehill (11-7, 6-3 NE-10) is back
in action on Wednesday as it looks to bounce back when it hosts
Franklin Pierce University at 7 p.m. Adelphi (18-6, 9-0 NE-10)
visits New York Institute of Technology on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
