Mass. (October 3, 2009) - Two goals from senior co-captain
Shaun Keeley (Woburn, Mass./Woburn) provided the
difference as Stonehill College picked up a 3-2 victory over the
University of New Haven in Northeast-10 Conference men's soccer
action at Skyhawk Field today.
Keeley scored the first and third
goals for Stonehill, who also got a goal from junior Todd
Shigo (Naples, Maine/Lake Region) just before the break.
Sophomore Ross McWilliams (Kingston, R.I./South
Kingstown) and freshmen Kristopher Brassard
(Barre, Vt./Tilton School) and Anthony Campagnano
(Schenectady, N.Y./Guilderland) each registered assists in
the Skyhawks second-straight win.
New Haven fought back from a goal
down twice to equalize with goals from junior Nick Dionne
(Meriden, Conn./O.H. Platt) and sophomore Anthony
Romano (Plainview, N.Y./Bethpage).
Junior goalkeeper Brandon
McFarlane (Norwich, Conn./Norwich Free Academy) made three
saves (all first half) to preserve the win for Stonehill. Sophomore
J.J. Comeau (Wallingford, Conn./Mark T. Sheehan)
posted two saves (both second half) in goal for New Haven. Shots
finished even at 11 aside in the match, with corner kicks a slight
advantage to the Skyhawks at 5-3.
Junior Todd Shigo put the Skyhawks in front just before the
break with his first goal of the year.

Stonehill took its first lead 13:13
into the match when Brassard released Keeley with a long pass down
the left flank. Keeley cut past one defender before chipping a shot
over the charging Comeau. New Haven answered nine minutes later
when the Skyhawks couldn't clear after a corner kick. Junior
Nick Pezzente (Old Saybrook, Conn./Middlesex CC)
headed the ball toward the right post where Romano got on the end
of it for his third goal of the season at the 22-minute mark.
Stonehill regained the lead just
before halftime as Campagnano connected with Shigo for a diving
header at the left post for his first goal of the season at 38:08.
New Haven equalized for a second time 8:03 into the second half as
Dionne took a square ball from the right side by freshman
Roberto Novoa (West Long Branch, N.J./Shore
Regional), turned past a Stonehill defender and drove the
ball past McFarlane for his first goal of the year.
Keeley provided his fourth
match-winner of the season (team-best sixth goal in all) just under
12 minutes later with a header in the center of the 18 in the
65th minute off a cross from the right side by
McWilliams who had re-entered the match seconds before.
Stonehill (7-4-1, 3-4-1 NE-10) is
off until next Saturday when it visits Saint Anselm College at 1
p.m. The Skyhawks return home on Wednesday, October 21, to host
Assumption College at 3:30 p.m. New Haven (1-9-0, 0-8-0 NE-10)
visits 18th-ranked Le Moyne College on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
