WINCHENDON, Mass. (November
21, 2009) - Franklin Pierce University netted the first
five goals and never looked back in posting a 6-2 victory over
Stonehill College in Northeast-10 Conference men's ice hockey
action at the Winchendon School Ice Rink tonight.
Sophomore Anthony
Chighisola (Whitman, Mass./Williston Northampton)
registered two goals and an assist to lead Franklin Pierce, while
sophomore Michael King (Center Conway,
N.H./Kennett) posted a goal and assist. The Ravens also
got two assists from freshman Wesley Russell (Marlboro,
Mass./Marlboro) and goals from senior Phil LaBreck
(Thornton, N.H./John Stark) and freshmen Michael
Carr (South Boston, Mass./New Hampton Prep) and
Tyler Cornele (Cape Coral, Fla./The Winchendon
School).
Stonehill got third period goals
from sophomores Bill Harris (Weymouth,
Mass./Weymouth) and Matthew Doherty (Milton,
Mass./Thayer Academy). Sophomore Andrew Diozzi
(Belmont, Mass./Deerfield) dished two assists for the
Skyhawks.
Senior Jon Tuttle (Concord,
N.H./Concord) posted 30 saves in goal to preserve the win
for Franklin Pierce. Sophomore Tyler Jackson (Little
Silver, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) stopped 30 shots
for Stonehill. The Ravens finished with a 36-32 advantage in shots
on goal and converted three-of-nine power play chances, compared to
1-of-7 efficiency for the Skyhawks with the man advantage.
Franklin Pierce scored the first
five goals of the contest, including a three-goal second period.
King opened the scoring with the lone goal of the first period at
8:25, assisted by sophomore Justin Adams (Homer,
Alaska/Homer), on the power play. Two of the Ravens three
second period goals came on the power play as well. Carr scored on
a 4-on-4, 41-seconds into the period, assisted by Chighisola and
freshman Roscoe Sweeney (Falmouth,
Mass./Falmouth). LaBreck struck with what would prove to
be the game-winner on the power play at 11:15, while Chighisola
netted his first of the night, assisted by King and Russell, on the
power play at 15:35.
Franklin Pierce extended its lead
to five goals when Cornele netted his first collegiate goal,
unassisted, 14-seconds into the third. Stonehill struck with
back-to-back goals from Harris on a power play at 2:59 and Doherty
at 5:28. Chighisola rounded out the scoring at 14:16.
Stonehill (2-4-1, 0-2-0 NE-10) is
back in action on Tuesday when it hosts Nichols College at the
Foxborough Sports Center at 7 p.m. Franklin Pierce (2-4-2, 1-0-1
NE-10) visits Western New England College on Tuesday at 7:15 p.m.
