MARLBOROUGH, Mass.
(November 6, 2009) - The 2009-2010 Stonehill College ice
hockey team apparently has a flair for the dramatic. Three days
after erasing a pair of two goal deficits to win its season-opener,
Stonehill rallied from a three-goal third period hole to tie
host Becker College, 3-3, on day one of the 2009 Ice Breaker
Tournament at the New England Sports Center tonight. The Skyhawks
advanced to tomorrow's championship with a 3-1 shootout
victory.
Stonehill out-scored Becker 3-1 in
the shootout after the two teams played through a scoreless
overtime period. Sophomore Patrick Greene (Weymouth,
Mass./Catholic Memorial) capped the Skyhawks shootout by
converting their third penalty shot attempt. Junior goalkeeper
Michael Manna (Framingham, Mass./Xaverian
Brothers) then stopped his third Becker penalty shot of
the shootout to seal the victory.
Manna finished with 37 saves to
give Stonehill a chance at the comeback, stopping all 26 shots on
goal after yielding three first period goals. He also stopped three
of Becker's four penalty shots in the shootout. The Hawks finished
with a slight 40-37 advantage in shots on goal for the night.
Senior Peter Roundy
(Simsbury, Conn./Kimball Union) had a goal and assist to
lead the Stonehill comeback. The Skyhawks also got third period
goals from sophomore Andrew Diozzi (Belmont,
Mass./Deerfield) and freshman George DeMello
(Cotuit, Mass./Tabor Academy).
Freshman Jonathan Gould
(Hudson, Mass.) led Becker with a goal and assist. The
Hawks also got goals from senior Jared Kersner (Rockville,
Md.) and freshman Ron Paiva (Rehoboth,
Mass.). Senior goaltender Tony Stoehr (Depere,
Wis.) finished with 33 saves for the Hawks.
Becker looked like it was going to
run away with the win, scoring three first period goals to
seemingly take control. Gould opened the scoring with a shorthanded
goal three minutes into the game, assisted by freshman Mark
Lotito (Staten Island, N.Y.). The Hawks struck again 12:47
into the first period with Paiva's goal, assisted by freshman
James Shea (Broad Channel, N.Y.). They extended
their lead to 3-0 with a power-play goal with 1:04 left in the
opening stanza as Gould and sophomore Nate Sayer (Dracut,
Mass.) set up Kersner.
After a scoreless second period,
Stonehill started mounting its rally with two power-play goals 3:24
apart. Roundy opened the Skyhawks scoring 5:13 into the third,
assisted sophomore Bill Harris (Weymouth,
Mass./Weymouth) and senior Christopher Rogers
(Westford, Mass./Pomfret School). Diozzi pulled Stonehill
within a goal with the second power-play tally, assisted by Roundy,
at 8:37. Stonehill knotted the score with 6:37 left in regulation
in an unassisted goal from DeMello. He assisted on the equalizing
goal in Stonehill's comeback win at Western New England on Tuesday.
Greene capped three-straight
successful penalty shots for Stonehill in the shootout, while
Rogers and Roundy scored for the Skyhawks in the first two rounds.
Stonehill (2-0-0, 0-0-0 NE-10) will
play for the Ice Breaker Tournament Championship tomorrow evening
against Plymouth State University, a 5-4 winner against Suffolk
University earlier today, at 5:10 p.m. Becker (0-2-0, 0-0-0
ECAC-NE) will battle Suffolk in the consolation game at 2:10 p.m.
