MARLBOROUGH, Mass.
(November 7, 2009) - Plymouth State University posted a
5-2 victory over Stonehill College to take the championship game of
the Becker College Ice Breaker Tournament at the New England Sports
Center this evening.
Senior Chris Chambers
(Crofton, Md.) led Plymouth with a three point night on a
goal and two assists, while sophomore Bryan Kriner
(Newport, R.I.) and freshman Sean Foley (Weymouth,
Mass.) each posted a goal and assist. Freshman Tim
Visich (Mount Pleasant, Mich.) dished two assists for the
Panthers who also got goals from sophomore Chris Zaremba
(Colorado Springs, Colo.) and freshman Chad
Wilhelm (Plymouth, Mich.).
Senior Peter Roundy
(Simsbury, Conn./Kimball Union) and sophomore
Patrick Greene (Weymouth, Mass./Catholic Memorial)
scored goals for Stonehill.
Freshman goaltender Jack
Astedt (Angelholm, Sweden) earned the win for Plymouth
State in his collegiate debut with 33 saves, 28 coming in the final
two periods. Sophomore Tyler Jackson (Little Silver,
N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) made 29 stops (11 first
period) in goal for Stonehill. Stonehill finished with a 35-34 edge
in shots after Plymouth enjoyed a 13-5 advantage in a two-goal
first period.
PSU jumped on top 3:36 into the
contest as Foley scored off feeds from Kriner and Chambers. The
Panthers doubled their lead with 1:20 left before the first
intermission with Zaremba's goal, assisted by Visich and junior
Sean Buckley (Sagamore, Mass.). PSU scored the
lone goal of the second period with a power-play goal from Kriner,
assisted by Foley and Chambers, with 6:09 left.
Stonehill, which erased third
period deficits of two and three goals in earning a win and tie
earlier this week, looked poised to repeat the feat again when
Greene netted his first goal of the season, assisted by freshman
Dana Borges (Taunton, Mass./Coyle Cassidy), on the
power-play 1:47 into the third period.
Plymouth answered less than three
minutes later with Wilhelm's goal, assisted by Visich and sophomore
Brian Johnson (East Bridgewater, Mass.), at 4:20.
Stonehill again drew within two goals with Roundy's second of the
season, assisted by senior Christopher Rogers (Westford,
Mass./Pomfret School) and sophomore Bill Harris
(Weymouth, Mass./Weymouth) with 40-seconds to play. The
Panthers answered again with an unassisted Chambers goal into an
empty net with 23-seconds remaining to seal the win.
Stonehill (1-1-1, 0-0-0 NE-10) is
back in action on Wednesday when it hosts Johnson & Wales
University at the Foxborough Sports Center at 7 p.m. Plymouth State
(2-0-0, 0-0-0 MASCAC) visits Worcester State College on Tuesday,
November 17, at 5:30 p.m.
