FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (December
1, 2009) - Stonehill College has posted back-to-back
shutouts for the first time in the 31-year history of the program
after posting a 3-0 victory over Worcester State College in
non-conference ice hockey action at the Foxborough Sports Center
tonight. In the process, the Skyhawks set a single-season record
with their third shutout of the season in just the first month of
the campaign.
Sophomore goaltender Tyler
Jackson (Little Silver, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy)
posted his second-straight shutout in the span of three days to
lead Stonehill to victory. His current scoreless minute streak of
125:44 is the longest ever posted by a Skyhawks goaltender. Jackson
finished with 20 saves in picking up the shutout win behind a
strong defensive effort led by freshman defenseman Shawn
Unis (Sandwich, Mass./Proctor Academy).
Sophomore Andrew Diozzi
(Belmont, Mass./Deerfield) led Stonehill with two goals on
the night, including one on the power-play, while freshman
David Nelson (Concord, N.H./Concord) netted his
first collegiate goal to ice the win for the Skyhawks, who scored a
goal in each of the three periods.
Senior Andrew Evans
(Cromwell, Conn.) finished with 36 saves in goal for
Worcester State as Stonehill finished with a 39-20 advantage in
shots on goal for the night. The Skyhawks converted on 2-of-8
power-play chances, while the Lancers finished 0-for-5.
Stonehill got the only goal it
would need as Diozzi opened the scoring just 54-seconds into the
contest when he pounced on a rebound off a shot by senior
Zachary Cantin (Saugus, Mass./Xavarian Brothers)
and pushed the puck past Evans. Diozzi would double the Skyhawks
lead on the power play at 17:31 of the second period, assisted by
senior captain Peter Roundy (Simsbury, Conn./Kimball
Union) and sophomore Patrick Greene (Weymouth,
Mass./Catholic Memorial), marking his third goal of the
season. The goal came just moments after Jackson made two point
blanks saves on sophomore Cody Warila (Shirley,
Mass.) and senior Lee Belisle (Chicopee,
Mass.) in the slot.
Stonehill iced the win with a final
power play marker with just nine seconds left in regulation when
Nelson scored from the bottom of the left circle, assisted by
freshman Dana Borges (Taunton, Mass./Coyle
Cassidy) and sophomore Bill Harris (Weymouth,
Mass./Weymouth).
