Skyhawks Ground Ravens 6-3 With Four Goal Third

defenseman David Schermerhorn (Norwich, Conn.)
scored the game winning goal in a back and forth contest to lead
Stonehill to a 6-3 win over the Franklin Pierce in a Northeast-10
Conference matchup on Saturday Night
The Ravens opened the game with a pair of goals in the first
period. The first score came just 61 seconds in when freshman
forward Nate Schursky stuffed home a loose puck from the top of the
crease for his second goal of the season.
Later, at the 13:54 mark, Shane Murphy took a shot from the left
circle and junior forward Casey Goodell pounced on the rebound to
tally his sixth goal of the season.
Stonehill would bring the game to a 2-2 tie with two goals in
the second period. First, freshman forward Andrew
Diozzi (Belmont, Mass.) stuffed in his fifth of the season
from the left post with an assist from defenseman Bill
Ninteau (Litchfield, N.H.) on the power-play goal at the
7:12 mark.
Later, the Skyhawks caught Franklin Pierce on a line change and
came into the zone with a two-man partial breakaway. Senior forward
John Sommers (Manchester, Conn.) scored his fifth
of the season as he finished off a feed from sophomore forward
Angelo Todesca (Westwood, Mass.) with just over
seven minutes remaining in the half.
Stonehill struck for a 3-2 lead on a power-play goal just 41
seconds into the third stanza when junior forward Peter
Roundy (Simsbury, Conn.) scored his fifth of the year with
a blast from the point on a pass from senior defenseman
James Florentino (West Roxbury, Mass.).
Franklin Pierce tied it up at three with just ten minutes left
in the contest, when Murphy scored his eighth of the year by
re-directing a shot by sophomore forward Sean
Woodring.
The Skyhawks didn't let up, as Schermerhorn scored his second of
the yearm for what would be the game winner, at the 12:04 mark, and
senior forward Brendan O'Brien (Braintree, Mass.)
picked up his fifth of the year 29 seconds later when he
converted a drop pass between the circles from freshman forward
Pat Greene (Weymouth, Mass.).
Tim Mathews (Mattapoisett, Mass.) added an
insurance goal, his second of the year, with just over five minutes
left. Sophomore goaltender Derek Chapdelaine
(Granby, Mass.) made 30 saves in net for Stonehill to earn the
victory while Raven freshman Ben Siok made 33 saves between the
pipes.
The Skyhawks improve to 8-9 with the win (1-2 NE-10) and return
to action on Wednesday at Southern New Hampshire.
