Skyhawks Skate To 1-1 Draw
Boxscore
Foxboro, Mass. - Senior Brendan
O'Brien (Braintree, Mass.) scored the Skyhawks lone goal
on senior day as Stonehill skated to a 1-1 draw with the Becker
Hawks at the Foxboro Sports Center on Saturday afternoon.
The Skyhawks put early pressure on Becker but were unable to
come up with a score. The Hawks soon returned the favor,
firing shots on sophomore Mike Manna (Framingham,
Mass.).
A penalty at the 14:52 mark gave the Skyhawks their first power
play of the day. They capitalized just eights seconds into
penalty, as O'Brien fired home a wrister from the right side off a
pass from Pete Roundy (Simsbury, Conn.) to give
Stonehill the one goal lead and his seventh score of the
season.
It would be the only goal of the period for the Skyhawks who
fired 15 total shots on goalie Tony Stoehr, while Becker only took
eight on Manna.
In the second it was Becker who came out on the offensive,
putting three shots on goal before the Skyhawks could get a shot
off. The Hawks continued to pressure Stonehill and were
finally rewarded nine and a half minutes into the period.
Junior Mike Hebert fired a shot from the right wing that came
off Manna's pads and landed right in front of the net where
freshman Jake Gilbert put home the rebound before Manna could
recover, knotting the game up at one.
The Skyhawks dominated play early on in the final stanza,
putting seven shots on Stoehr, while only allowing just two.
Becker also had chances also, as Jared Kersner was denied by Manna
on a breakaway with four and a half minutes remaining. The
Hawks finished the period with 13 shots while Stonehill had 14 as
neither team could net the game winner in regulation.
In overtime, the Skyhawks fired three shots on goal including a
shot by Roundy with just under ten seconds remaining. The Hawks had
three shots as well, but the goaltenders held strong for the 1-1
draw.
Stoehr had 40 saves for Becker, while Manna made 37 stops for
Stonehill, who moves to 8-10-1 with the draw.
The Skyhawks return to action on Tuesday when they play host to
St. Michael's for their final home contest of the season.
Gametime is set for 6:00 p.m.
