ALBANY, N.Y. (September 12,
2009) - The College of Saint Rose, ranked third in this
week's National Soccer Coaches Association of America
(NSCAA)/adidas Division II poll, scored the match-winning goal less
than four minutes after Stonehill College, ranked ninth in the
NSCAA/adidas East Regional poll, had gotten a tying score to escape
with a 2-1 victory in Northeast-10 Conference women's soccer at The
Albany Academy for Girls today.
Sophomore Derith Fernandes
(Billerica, Mass./Billerica Memorial) scored the
match-winner for Saint Rose into an empty net, when a long service
from sophomore Kimberly Morton (Westerly,
R.I./Westerly) from 40-yards out got past the entire
Stonehill defensive unit with just 7:16 left in regulation.
Fernandes settled the ball and calmly slotted the deciding goal
into the open net.
Fernandes' goal came less than four
minutes after Stonehill had equalized via senior captain
Kelly Regan (Mansfield, Mass./Mansfield) from
12-yards out, off a pass from the left side by Kelsey
Mahoney (Rehoboth, Mass./Dighton-Rehoboth), for her first
goal of the season in the 79th minute. In fact, the goal
is the first allowed by Saint Rose this season - snapping a streak
of 381 scoreless minutes.
Saint Rose played three different
players in goal over the course of the mstch, combining for three
saves on the night. Sophomore Sarah Hickey (Lee,
Mass./Lee) finished with six saves in net for Stonehill as
the Golden Knights finished with a 14-5 shots advantage.
After a scoreless opening half,
Saint Rose forged a lead in the 59th minute as sophomore
Amanda Deck (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse)
one-timed a pass from classmate Brittany Godin (Rochester,
N.Y./Greece Arcadia) into the net for her third goal of
the season.
Stonehill (3-2-0, 1-2-0 NE-10) is
back in action on Wednesday night when it visits Southern New
Hampshire University for a match at 7 p.m. The Skyhawks return home
next Saturday to host Adelphi University at 11 a.m. Saint Rose
(5-0-0, 3-0-0 NE-10) hosts the University of New Haven on Wednesday
at 4:15 p.m.
