EASTON, Mass. (September
19, 2009) - Adelphi University, ranked 15th in
this week's National Soccer Coaches Association of America
(NSCAA)/adidas Division II poll, used to a first half goal and
tough defensive effort to claim a 1-0 victory over Stonehill
College in Northeast-10 Conference women's soccer action at Skyhawk
Field today.
Junior Brianne McDonnell
(Commack, N.Y./Commack) scored the lone goal of the match
8:35 before halftime when she got on the end of a long service off
a free kick by senior Amanda Popoli (South Salem, N.Y./John
Jay), broke in behind the Stonehill defense and fired a
shot from the center of the 18 for her fourth goal of the season.
Sophomore Dorothy Connolly
(Bethpage, N.Y./Long Island Lutheran) made seven saves
(four in the second half) to post her fourth shutout of the season.
Sophomore Sarah Hickey (Lee, Mass./Lee) posted a
career-best 11 saves in goal for Stonehill - seven in the first
half alone. Adelphi finished with a 14-11 advantage in shots for
the match, 9-2 in the first half.
Stonehill applied good pressure in
the second half, but were unable to get the equalizer that they had
found in each of its last two matches. The Skyhawks out-shot the
Panthers 8-5 over the final 45-minutes.
Stonehill (4-3-0, 2-3-0 NE-10)
returns to action on Tuesday when it visits Merrimack College at 7
p.m. The Skyhawks return home next Saturday, September 26, to host
Southern Connecticut State University at noon. Adelphi (6-1-0,
5-1-0 NE-10) visits Le Moyne College on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
