Southern Connecticut State Holds Off Stonehill, 2-1
Cook and Mallico collect
goals to bring Owls to victory

Mass. (September 26, 2009) - Southern Connecticut State
University, ranked seventh in this week's National Soccer Coaches
Association of America (NSCAA)/adidas Division II poll, scored the
first two goals of the match and made them stand up claim a 2-1
victory over Stonehill College in Northeast-10 Conference women's
soccer action at the Skyhawk Field today.
Senior Katrina Cook
(Westtown, N.Y./Minisink Valley) and junior
Jenna Mallico (Milford,
Conn./Foran) both scored unassisted goals to lead Southern
Connecticut to victory.
Junior goalkeeper Katie
Dido (Vernon, Conn./Rockville) finished with ten saves,
with seven in the first half alone, to preserve the win. Sophomore
Sarah Hickey (Lee, Mass./Lee) finished with six
saves in goal for Stonehill, who finished with a 13-12 edge in
shots.
Cook gave Southern Connecticut the
lead in the 23rd minute with a shot inside the six that
deflected off a defender and past Hickey. Mallico doubled the Owls
lead with a shot to the upper left corner 3:39 before halftime.
Stonehill was able to get a goal
back just before halftime when senior Kirsten Rene
(Wilbraham, Mass./Minnechaug Regional) scored just over
two minutes later, with a header off a free kick by freshman
Allison Nagle (Mansfield, Mass./Mansfield) at
43:22.
Stonehill (4-5-0, 2-5-0 NE-10)
returns to action on Monday when it visits the University of
Bridgeport for a non-conference matchup at 7p.m. The Skyhawks
return home on Wednesday to host 22nd-ranked Franklin
Pierce University at 4 p.m. Southern Connecticut (6-3-0, 3-3-0
NE-10) hosts 3rd-ranked The College of Saint Rose on
Wednesday at 7 p.m.
