EASTON, Mass. (September
29, 2009) - Stonehill College got two goals from sophomore
Michael White (Lisbon, N.H./Lisbon Regional) to
claim a 2-1 victory over the University of Massachusetts Lowell in
Northeast-10 Conference men's soccer action at Skyhawk Field this
afternoon.
White netted two unassisted goals,
with his second coming on a rebound after UMass Lowell senior
goalkeeper Ryan Richards (Holden, Mass./Wachusett)
stopped the initial shot with a kick save for what proved to be the
match-winner at 59:53. White opened the scoring 16:12 into the
match when he knocked in a deflected shot.
The lead didn't last long for
Stonehill as UMass Lowell answered less than a minute later as
sophomore Matheus Candido (Lowell, Mass./Lowell)
released junior Stephen Potcner (Wilmington,
Mass./Wilmington) off on a breakaway for his fifth goal of
the season at 17:10.
Junior goalkeeper Brandon
McFarlane (Norwich, Conn./Norwich Free Academy) made three
saves (all first half) to preserve the victory for Stonehill.
Richards finished with seven stops in goal for UMass Lowell. The
Skyhawks finished with a 12-10 edge in shots for the match.
The win improves Stonehill's home
record to 6-1-1 this season and ends a four match winless streak.
Stonehill (6-4-1, 2-4-1 NE-10) is
back in action on Saturday when it hosts the University of New
Haven at 11 a.m. UMass Lowell (3-5-0, 2-4-0 NE-10) visits Saint
Anselm College on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
