Stonehill Sweeps at Assumption Tri-Match

Skyhawks open 2009 season with victories over Franklin Pierce & Assumption

Junior Andrea Wirth averaged 10.29 assists and 2.43 digs per game as Stonehill opened the 2009 season with a a pair of wins today.

WORCESTER, Mass. (September 5, 2009) - The Stonehill College volleyball team got its 2009 season off to a flying start with a pair of wins today over Franklin Pierce University and Assumption College in a tri-match at the Plourde Recreation Center on the Assumption campus.

Stonehill opened with a 3-1 (23-25, 25-14, 25-16, 25-18) victory over Franklin Pierce, before sweeping Assumption 3-0 (25-17, 25-14, 25-20).

Junior setter Andrea Wirth (Mesa, Ariz./St. Mary's) engineered the wins by averaging 10.29 assists and 2.43 digs per game. Sophomore Michelle Thornhill (Canyon Lake, Calif./Temescal Canyon) led the hitters with 3.00 kills and 4.25 digs per game, while junior Laura Noonan (Hampstead, N.H./Bishop Guertin) averaged 2.43 kills and a block per game, while hitting .316 for the afternoon.

Stonehill placed four players in double-figures for kills as the Skyhawks bounced back from a game one defeat to reel off the next three for the victory.

Noonan and sophomore Laura Huselton (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) led the way with 14 kills each, with Huselton also contributing ten digs and Noonan hitting .423 with two blocks. Thornhill added 12 kills and 17 digs, while junior Erin Johnson (Centerville, Mass./Barnstable) chipped in ten kills.

Wirth dished 46 assists to go with 11 digs for the Skyhawks, while junior Justine Thompson (Merrimack, N.H./Bishop Guertin) collected a match-high 29 digs.

Senior Megan Feldmeth (South Pasadena, Calif./South Pasadena) led Franklin Pierce with ten kills, while junior Pamela Walker (Chino Hills, Calif./Chino Hills) dished 30 assists and classmate Chelsie Kohout (Harrison Township, Mich./L'Anse Cruese) chipped in 16 digs.

Stonehill capped off the day with a comfortable 3-0 victory over host Assumption. Wirth starred with 26 assists and six digs. Johnson added ten kills, while Noonan registered five blocks and Huselton chipped in nine digs and seven kills with just one attack error (.353).

Junior Aimee Drainville (Rockville, R.I./Chariho) led Assumption with nine kills. Senior Kelly Blumenauer (Islip Terrace, N.Y./East Islip) collected 22 assists and four digs, while freshman Steph Whooten (Norton, Mass./Bishop Feehan) registered nine digs.

Stonehill (2-0, 0-0 NE-10) is back in action next weekend when it participates in the Lock Haven Invitational in Pennsylvania. The Skyhawks will face Shippensburg University and Northern Kentucky University on Friday, before taking on host Lock Haven and Molloy College on Saturday.
