Osier posts second-straight
shutout with six saves; Foley nets lone goal
EASTON, Mass. (October
16, 2010) – Stonehill College, ranked seventh in
this week's Kookaburra/National Field Hockey Coaches Association
(NFHCA) Division II poll, ran its winning streak to six games with
a key 1-0 victory over Adelphi University in Northeast-10
Conference field hockey action at W.B. Mason Stadium this
afternoon.
Senior goalkeeper Courtney
Osier (South Dennis, Mass./Dennis-Yarmouth) posted her
second-straight shutout of the week for Stonehill as she made six
saves. It marks her fourth shutout of the season and
15th in her career. Sophomore Kristine Puzio
(Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem North) finished with seven stops in
the cage for Adelphi, which also got three defensive saves on the
afternoon. Stonehill posted an 18-10 advantage in shots for the day
and a 10-6 break on penalty corners.
Senior back Courtney
Foley (Wakefield, Mass./Wakefield Memorial) scored the
lone goal of the game and helped lead the Stonehill defensive
effort. Classmate Lauren Gifford
(Goffstown, N.H./Goffstown) aided in the defensive showing
and assisted on the lone goal.
After a scoreless first half with a
combined eight shots (6-2 Stonehill), Stonehill began to pile up
the shots in the second half and was rewarded with a series of
penalty corners just past the 51-minute mark. Gifford and Foley
worked a give-and-go off a corner from senior Lindsey
Pinkham (Skowhegan, Maine/Skowhegan Area) and Gifford
slipped a pass through two Adelphi defenders before Foley blasted
in her third goal of the season from the left side at 51:17.
Osier did the rest, making four
saves over the final ten minutes of the contest to preserve the
win. Stonehill nearly doubled their lead at 55:43, but junior
Kathryn
Nelson's (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) shot was
blocked away from an open net by Adelphi freshman Jamie
Ackerman (Nesconset, N.Y./Smithtown East).
Stonehill (9-4, 5-0 NE-10) is right
back in action on Tuesday when it hosts Franklin Pierce University
for an NE-10 clash at 7 p.m. Adelphi (7-5, 2-1 NE-10) is off until
next Saturday when it visits Franklin Pierce at 3 p.m.
