St. Martin and McEvily score for Skyhawks, but neither
side can break deadlock in extra time
SYRACUSE, N.Y. (October 23, 2010) – The
Stonehill College women’s soccer team posted a 2-2
double-overtime tie at Le Moyne College in a Northeast-10 matchup
Saturday.
Senior Kirstie St. Martin (Providence, R.I./Mount Saint
Charles Academy) scored early for the Skyhawks, and senior
Caitlin McEvily
(New Rochelle, N.Y./The Ursuline School) netted the tying
goal after Le Moyne rallied behind goals from sophomores Jennifer
Fabian (Clay, N.Y./C.W. Baker) and Christie Morano (Highland,
N.Y./Highland). Freshman goalkeeper Amy Wheaton
(Dartmouth, Mass./Dartmouth) made four saves, and junior
Felicia Tynan (Oxford, N.Y./Oxford) stopped eight shots for Le
Moyne.
St. Martin struck first for Stonehill, scoring her career-high
15th goal of the season in the 17th minute when she pounced on a
loose ball in the penalty box and drilled it past the oncoming
goalkeeper. The 1-0 lead would stand up until the second half, as
the Dolphins attempted four shots before the break but were held
scoreless by Wheaton in net.
Le Moyne rallied early in the second half, though, scoring twice
in a five-minute span to take over the lead. Fabian netted a header
at the left post in the 51st minute to tie it, and in the 56th
minute, junior Rachel Farneti (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus) served a
corner kick to Morano in front of the net, who scored from short
range to put Le Moyne ahead 2-1.
McEvily took it back minutes later, converting a 58th-minute
penalty kick to knot the game at 2-2, but neither side could
capitalize on a combined 12 chances over the final half-hour of
regulation to send the game into extra time.
Following a scoreless first overtime period, junior Kelsey
Mahoney (Rehoboth, Mass./Dighton-Rehoboth) had a shot
turned back by Tynan early in the second extra frame, and Wheaton
made a stop against Le Moyne junior Jackie Coe (Grand Island,
N.Y./Grand Island) in the 103rd minute on the last serious scoring
chance either side would see on the way to a 2-2 final score.
Stonehill (8-7-2, 6-6-2 NE-10) closes out the regular season at
home on Wednesday against Merrimack at 3:30 p.m.
