St. Martin, Pacapelli score two each for Skyhawks;
Wheaton earns first victory in goal
WALTHAM, Mass. (October 5, 2010) –
Stonehill College jumped ahead early and finished off a 5-1 win
over host Bentley University in a Northeast-10 women’s soccer
matchup Tuesday.
Senior Kirstie St.
Martin (Providence, R.I./Mount Saint Charles Academy)
tallied two goals and an assist for Stonehill, and freshman
Nicole Pacapelli (West Haven, Conn./West
Haven) scored her first two collegiate goals. Senior
Caitlin McEvily
(New Rochelle, N.Y./The Ursuline School) added her third
goal of the year for the Skyhawks and recorded an assist.
Freshman goalkeeper Amy Wheaton
(Dartmouth, Mass./Dartmouth) made three saves for the
victory in her first collegiate start.
McEvily kicked off the Stonehill offensive attack with a goal in
just the second minute, set up by sophomore Elizabeth
Belanger (Hooksett, N.H./Manchester Central).
Pacapelli followed with a second score before the ten-minute mark,
taking a pass from St. Martin outside the top of the box and
drilling home her first career goal from 20 yards.
St. Martin put away two of her own in the second half, netting a
short-range volley off a cross from McEvily in the 52nd minute, and
beating the Bentley back line for an unassisted tally in the 70th
minute. With two goals and an assist on the afternoon, St. Martin
extends her NE-10 lead in goals (12) and points (30).
Pacapelli also wrapped up her double in the second half, lining
a shot past the dive of Bentley goalkeeper Kara Smith (West
Springfield, Mass./West Springfield). Smith finished with nine
saves.
The Falcons avoided the shutout in the 71st minute, as freshman
Patty McAllister (South Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) collected a
pass on the left side from sophomore Laura Muise (Newburyport,
Mass./Newburyport) and netted her first career goal for the final
5-1 score.
Stonehill (6-4-1, 5-3-1 NE-10) next hosts Assumption College on
October 8 at 3:30 p.m. Bentley (0-8-2, 0-6-2 NE-10) visits Saint
Rose on October 8 at 5 p.m.
