Bridges nets two as Skyhawks win third straight
EASTON, Mass. (September 11, 2010) –
Stonehill College posted a 2-0 shutout of Queens College (N.Y.) in
a non-conference men’s soccer matchup Saturday at Skyhawk
Field. The victory has the Skyhawks off to a 3-0 start for the
second season in a row.
Senior Michael
Bridges (Sandwich, Mass./Sandwich) handled the scoring
for Stonehill, netting his first two goals of the season, and
senior goalkeeper Brandon
McFarlane (Norwich, Conn./Norwich Free Academy) made
two saves in his second shutout.
The Stonehill defense, anchored by senior Kevin Moroney
(Medway, Mass./Medway) and sophomores Kris
Brassard (Barre, Vt./Tilton School) and Kevin Wendth
(Slingerlands, N.Y./Bethlehem), set the tone early as they
held Queens to just two shots in the first half, while the Skyhawks
managed ten first-half shots but were kept off the board by five
saves from Queens junior goalkeeper Dario Cabanas (Bridgewater,
N.J./Bridgewater Regional).
Stonehill went ahead for good in the 48th minute when junior
Michael
White (Lisbon, N.H./Lisbon Regional) flicked a cross
to Bridges, who put away a wide shot from the right side. Bridges
netted a second on a 62nd-minute header set up by senior Todd Shigo
(Naples, Maine/Lake Region).
Stonehill (3-0, 1-0 NE-10) plays its next six matches in the
Northeast-10 Conference, beginning with a visit to Southern New
Hampshire University on Tuesday at 7 p.m. Queens (0-3, 0-0 ECC)
will next play at Nyack College on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
Press play to hear from Bridges
and head coach Jim Reddish about winning three in a row, the
halftime switch that made all the difference, and the road ahead in
the NE-10.
