St. Martin scores for Skyhawks in loss
GARDEN CITY, N.Y. (September 12, 2010) –
The Stonehill College women’s soccer team dropped a 2-1
decision to host Adelphi University in a Northeast-10 matchup
Sunday.
Stonehill senior Kirstie St. Martin (Providence, R.I./Mount Saint
Charles Academy) scored in the 20th minute to give the
Skyhawks an early lead, but Adelphi came back in the second half
with two unanswered goals from senior Kim Volinski (Greenport,
N.Y./Greenport) and sophomore Allison Gronenthal (Levittown,
N.Y./Island Trees) to take the victory.
Stonehill went ahead 1-0 at 19:36, when junior Kelsey Mahoney
(Rehoboth, Mass./Dighton-Rehoboth) lined a pass from
midfield to St. Martin, who put away her seventh goal of the
season. The lead held up for the first half, but the Panthers
responded less than a minute into the second frame as sophomore
Kaitlin Monteith (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) set up Volinski in
front of the net for the tying goal.
Gronenthal scored the winner for Adelphi in the 77th minute,
knocking home her own rebound against Stonehill junior goalkeeper
Sarah
Hickey (Lee, Mass./Lee), who finished with six saves.
Adelphi junior goalkeeper Dorothy Connolly (Bethpage, N.Y./Long
Island Lutheran) totaled five stops in net for the Panthers.
Stonehill (3-2, 2-1 NE-10) will next visit UMass-Lowell on
Wednesday at 7 p.m. Adelphi (1-1-1, 1-1 NE-10) takes on American
International College in Springfield at the same time.
