NEW HAVEN, Conn. (September 25, 2010) –
Stonehill College and host Southern Connecticut State University
played to a double-overtime 0-0 tie in a Northeast-10 women’s
soccer matchup Saturday.
Junior goalkeeper Sarah
Hickey (Lee, Mass./Lee) made four saves in her third
shutout of the season, but the Skyhawks, currently ranked #7 in the
National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Division II
East Regional poll, were held off the board as well by five saves
from Southern Connecticut’s Katie DiDio (Vernon,
Conn./Rockville).
Hickey went untested in the first half as the Owls managed no
shots on goal against the Stonehill defense, and DiDio stopped a
shot by senior Kirstie St.
Martin (Providence, R.I./Mount Saint Charles Academy)
just before the break.
The Skyhawks saw more scoring chances in the second half,
putting four shots on target in the first fifteen minutes, but
could not convert against DiDio. Hickey made three stops in the
second half to keep the game scoreless, including a key save
against freshman Laura Barberia (Pamplona, Spain/San Cernin) with
three minutes left in regulation.
Neither side managed a shot in the first overtime period, and
Hickey turned back a second attempt by Barberia nineteen seconds
into the final period of extra time, which would prove to be the
last scoring chance of the day.
Stonehill (5-3-1, 4-2-1) returns home on October 2 for an Alumni
Weekend matchup against Saint Rose at 1:30 p.m.
