Johnson leads Skyhawks to sweep
WALTHAM, Mass. (September 28, 2010) – The
Stonehill College volleyball team won their third straight
Northeast-10 matchup on Tuesday, defeating host Bentley University
3-0 (33-31, 25-17, 25-17).
Senior Erin
Johnson (Centerville, Mass./Barnstable) led the
Stonehill offense with a .300 hitting percentage on a game-high 14
kills, supported by seven each from junior Laura Huselton
(Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) and freshman Kirsten
Arvidson (Andover, Mass./Andover) and eight from
freshman Sydney Maxey
(Hutto, Texas/Hutto), who also tallied 10 digs. Senior
Justine
Thompson (Merrimack, N.H./Bishop Guertin) recorded a
team-high 16 digs and added three service aces.
Bentley was led by eight kills from sophomore Bridget Lawson
(Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West HS) and 16 digs from senior Maitlyn
Kraft (New Braunfels, Texas/St. Mary's Hall).
The opening set proved to be the toughest challenge of the night
for the Skyhawks, who needed 33 points to finish it off after the
lead changed sides ten times. With the Skyhawks down 31-30, Johnson
put down a kill to tie the score and spark a three-point run for
Stonehill, who finished the set on a kill from Maxey.
The Skyhawks pulled away in the second set with a seven-point
run including two kills by Maxey and two service aces by senior
Anna Berthiaume
(Somersworth, N.H./Somersworth), and sealed the 25-17 win
with kills from Johnson and Arvidson. Stonehill then went ahead 3-2
early in the first set and never gave up the lead on the way to a
matching 25-17 score.
Stonehill (5-6, 3-0 NE-10) next hosts the University of
Bridgeport in an Alumni Weekend match on October 2 at 1:30 p.m.
