OAKDALE, N.Y. (September 3,
2010) – The Stonehill College volleyball team
dropped a 3-2 (25-20, 21-25, 20-25, 25-21, 15-10) setback to
Adelphi University in a non-conference matchup on day one of the
Golden Lion Classic hosted by Dowling College.
Freshman Sydney Maxey
(Hutto, Texas/Hutto) led Stonehill with 12 kills, and also
added 17 digs and four service aces. Senior Laura
Noonan (Hampstead, N.H./Bishop Guertin) posted a .636
hitting percentage with eight kills, and senior setter Andrea Wirth
(Mesa, Ariz./St. Mary's) recorded 33 assists. The Skyhawk
defense was led by a game-high 21 digs from senior Justine
Thompson (Merrimack, N.H./Bishop Guertin).
Adelphi took the victory by way of
a balanced offensive attack, as four players recorded double
figures in kills. The Panthers were led by a double-double (18
kills, 20 digs) by senior Hilary Pavels (North Woodmere,
N.Y./Valley Stream South), while junior Patawe
Simms (East Patchogue, N.Y./Bellport) added 15 kills and
sophomores Emily Dorko (Matamoras, PA/Delaware
Valley) and Samantha Rico (Port Jefferson,
N.Y./Vandermeulen) notched 10 apiece. Senior setter
Heather Mau (Honolulu, Hawaii/Maryknoll) dished
out 41 assists in the win.
The Skyhawks went ahead 2-1 after
three sets, but Adelphi rallied to win two straight for the overall
victory.
Stonehill (0-1, 0-1 NE-10) and
Adelphi (1-0, 1-0 NE-10) will each play Dowling College and Pace
University tomorrow in the conclusion of the Golden Lion
Classic.
