White scores twice, Hebert nets winner in 75th
minute
EASTON, Mass. (September 8, 2010) – The
Stonehill College men’s soccer team posted a 4-3 victory over
Northeast-10 rival American International College this afternoon at
Skyhawk Field. After being held scoreless in the first half, the
Skyhawks came back to score four second-half goals for their second
straight win to open the season.
Senior Tyler Hebert
(Rockland, Mass./Sacred Heart) netted the game-winner in
the 75th minute, and Stonehill also got two goals from junior
Michael White (Lisbon, N.H./Tilton School) and
a goal and assist from sophomore Jonathan Hope
(Avon, Conn./Avon). Senior goalkeeper Brandon
McFarlane (Norwich, Conn./Norwich Free Academy) made
seven saves in the net for the Skyhawks. AIC was led by two goals
from sophomore Conor Doyle (Douglas, Isle of Man/Queen Elizabeth
II), and junior Thomas Denomme (North Smithfield, R.I./North
Smithfield) added a third.
The Yellow Jackets held a 1-0 advantage throughout the first
half, as Doyle scored in the opening minutes and junior goalkeeper
James Taber (Liverpool, N.Y./Herkimer C.C.) made four first-half
saves to keep the Skyhawks off the board. Stonehill responded early
in the second frame, though, as White scored his first of the day
just 24 seconds into the half.
Stonehill broke the tie in the 62nd minute when Hope netted a
cross from senior Michael Bridges
(Sandwich, Mass./Sandwich), sparking a three-minute span
in which the game was tied two different times. Denomme connected
for American International in the 63rd minute, followed by
White’s second of the day for Stonehill in the 64th and
Doyle’s second for the Yellow Jackets in the 65th, knotting
the score at 3-3.
Hebert put away a header in the 75th minute when a throw-in from
senior Kevin Moroney
(Medway, Mass./Medway) found Hebert in front of the net
for the eventual winner, and the Stonehill defense held American
International to one shot over the final fifteen minutes to seal
the victory.
Stonehill (2-0, 1-0 NE-10) returns to Skyhawk Field on Saturday
to host Queens College (N.Y.) at 11 a.m. American International
(1-2, 0-1 NE-10) travels to New York Institute of Technology
