Winning streak snapped at 10-straight matches

BRIDGEPORT, CONN. (September 20, 2011) – The Stonehill College women's volleyball team's 10-match winning streak came to an end on Tuesday night as the University of Bridgeport defeated the Skyhawks, 3-2, by scores of 22-25, 25-23, 25-23, 23-25 and 15-12.

Sophomore outside hitter Sydney Maxey (Hutto, Texas/Hutto) notched a double-double in the losing effort compiling 31 kills on 66 attacks for a .409 hitting percentage and 24 digs.

Sophomore right-side hitter Kirsten Arvidson (Andover, Mass./Andover) chipped in with 11 kills and three block assists while freshman setter Emily Iverson (Elmhurst, Ill./York) dished out 64 assists. Senior captain Laura Huselton (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) fell one kill shy of a double-double to go along with 15 digs.

The Purple Knights were led by an all-around balanced attack having three players record double-digit marks in kills.

Freshman Biljana Savic (Novi Sad, Serbia/Gimnazija Isidora Sekulic) posted 14 kills and 18 digs while teammate Fernanda Costa (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil/Arizona Western College) tallied similar numbers with 14 kills and 16 digs. Larissa Oliveira (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/Magnum Agostiniane HS) compiled 13 kills and Tamara Leite (Natal, Brazil/Cloud County CC) handed out 44 assists and registered 18 digs.

The fifth set of the match saw five ties but only one lead change as Bridgeport staved off a late rally from Stonehill.

Down 13-9, Arvidson jumpstarted the rally with a kill, set up by Iverson, for a 13-10 deficit and quickly made it 13-11 teaming up with sophomore middle blocker Vivian Fitzgerald (Winfield, Ill./Aurora Central Catholic) on a block assist. After an attacking error from Bridgeport cut the score within one, the Purple Knights called a timeout and Costa broke the huddle with her 14th and final kill of the match for a 14-12 lead. The Skyhawks rally fell short as Bridgeport claimed its final point on a Stonehill attacking error.

Stonehill (11-2, 1-0 NE-10) travels to Saint Michael's for a NE-10 Conference matchup on Saturday, September 24 at 5 p.m. Bridgeport (4-1, 0-0 ECC) hosts the New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) on Thursday, September 22 at 7 p.m.
