Skyhawks outshoot Chargers 19-3, improve to 3-1-1 in NE-10 play

EASTON, Mass. (September 27, 2014) – Stonehill College turned in a dominant defensive effort, holding the University of New Haven to three total shots in a 3-0 shutout victory this afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference women's soccer action at Skyhawk Field.

Stonehill outshot New Haven 19-3 in the contest, and the Skyhawks also had seven corner kick opportunities to the Chargers zero.

Sophomore goalkeeper Jamie Block (Georgetown, Massachusetts/Georgetown) benefited from an airtight defense in front of her, as she registered her fourth shutout of the season without having to make a single save. In 650 minutes of action this season, Block currently ranks fifth in the NE-10 with a 0.97 goals against average, while her .800 save percentage is good for seventh.

Stonehill opened the scoring in the 42nd minute, when senior midfielder Carolyn Moodie (Littleton, Massachusetts/Littleton) poked the ball in at the left post after classmate Christine Moodie's (Littleton, Massachusetts/Littleton) shot was blocked in her direction.

Sophomore forward Lauren Kapatoes (Hopedale, Massachusetts/Hopedale) gave the home team a 2-0 advantage just four minutes into the second half, when she one-touched the ball past New Haven redshirt freshman keeper Deandra Nash (Deer Park, New York/Deer Park) into the left side of the net off a feed from classmate Hannah Fay (Tolland, Connecticut/Tolland).

Senior midfielder Kate Wegener (Brockton, Massachusetts/Brockton) capped the scoring five minutes later, as she collected her own rebound after hitting the post and buried it past Nash for her second goal of the season. Despite giving up the three goals, Nash was solid in net for the Chargers, making six saves in the contest.

With their win today, the Skyhawks have matched their win total from a season ago. Stonehill finished 5-11-2 in 2013, including 5-8-1 in conference play.

Stonehill (5-1-1, 3-1-1), ranked sixth in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) East Region Poll, will be back in action next Wednesday, October 1st, when the Skyhawks are set to host Southern New Hampshire University at Skyhawk Field. New Haven (3-5, 2-3 NE-10) will also be in action next Wednesday, as the Chargers travel to American International College for an NE-10 clash.
