EASTON, Mass. (October 23, 2021) - Sophomore Jacob Woznicki's goal 34-seconds into the second overtime session lifted Stonehill College to a massive 1-0 triumph over Franklin Pierce University, ranked No. 1 in the United Soccer Coaches Division II poll, on Senior Day in Northeast-10 Conference men's soccer action at Skyhawk Field today.

The Details

  • The win marks Stonehill's first in program history against a team ranked No. 1 in the country and stirs memories of a 2-1 win by the Stonehill women's soccer program against a then No. 2-ranked Franklin Pierce team that would go on to win the NCAA Division II National Championship on the very same field in 1999.
  • Stonehill notches its highest-ranked victory on a day when it recognized its six seniors: captains Eben Degbor and Luke Fuller, along with classmates Luka Gjuraj, Kevin O'Shea, Ian Pereira and Nico Rossitto. The Skyhawks dealt Franklin Pierce its first loss of the season and first setback since a 2-0 setback to the University of Charleston (W.V.) in the quarterfinals of the 2019 NCAA Tournament, also marking the last time the Ravens were shutout.

  • Hammersley made five saves in the clean sheet effort (PHOTO BY Saylor Murphy)
Junior Andrew Hammersley backboned an outstanding defensive effort for Stonehill in notching its second clean sheet of the season with five saves – the last with a catch save on a free kick in the final seconds of the first overtime.
  • Hammersley was supported by his defensive backline of Degbor, junior Michael Moylan and sophomores Chris Sederquist and Shon Ryan, with Fuller dropping back in support from midfield.
  • Stonehill is now unbeaten against Franklin Pierce in the Ravens last two visits to Skyhawk Field (1-0-1), including a 1-1 double-overtime draw here in 2018, and marks the Skyhawks first win over the Ravens since a 2-1 decision in Rindge, New Hampshire, in 2015. Stonehill also knocked off Franklin Pierce at Skyhawk Field (3-2) in 2014 for its first ever win against the Ravens.
  • Woznicki's winner came shortly after play resumed in the second overtime when sophomore Zach Davis poked a loose ball after a charging run down the left flank by Pereira from inside the six towards the top of the 18, where Woznicki stepped into a shot from just inside the top of the 18 for a low shot that snuck inside the left post for his third goal of the season (second matchwinner).
  • Woznicki's winner snapped a scoring drought of over 422 minutes across Stonehill's last five matches.
  • Junior Kosta Maniatis made two second half saves in goal for Franklin Pierce, including a golden chance from Pereira late in regulation.
