BOSTON, Mass. (October 7, 2023) – The Stonehill College men's ice hockey team dropped its season opener, 7-0, to nationally ranked Northeastern University on Saturday night.

Highlights

  • Senior forward Alex Campbell led the Northeastern offensive attack, dishing out an assist in the first period before scoring a pair of goals in the third.
  • Graduate students Pito Walton and Liam Walsh as well as sophomore Cam Lund also scored their first goals of the season.
  • Sophomore pairing of Jackson Dorrington and Vinny Borgesi scored their first career goals for the Huskies.
  • Freshman netminder Cameron Whitehead earned his first career win and shutout in his collegiate debut for Northeastern, registering 13 saves on the night.
  • Sophomore defender Greg Japchen led the Skyhawks with three shots on goal and five blocked shots.
  • Sophomore goaltender Dylan Meilun tallied a career-high 45 saves in between the pipes for Stonehill.

How it Happened

  • Northeastern came out of the gates strong scoring two goals within the opening seven minutes of the contest.
  • Stonehill would apply pressure on their first power play opportunity of the game as graduate student Matthew Allen, sophomore duo of Frank Ireland and Dean Schwenninger as well as freshman Conor Ronayne registered a combined four shots, two being on net, over a 30 second span at the 10-minute mark of the first.
  • However, the Skyhawks were unable to breakthrough and find the back of the net. Northeastern regained its early momentum after the penalty kill and tacked one more goal on the board at the 16:14 mark of the first.
  • The Huskies offense kept up the pressure in the second as Borgesi and Walsh scored their first goals of the season to extend the Northeastern lead to 5-0 heading into the second intermission.
  • Campbell capped off the Huskies scoring with a pair of goals in the third to seal the 7-0 victory for Northeastern.
