Men’s Soccer Secures First NEC Win, 3-1, at FDU

Three first-half goals propel Skyhawks over Knights for first conference victory of 2024

TEANECK, N.J. (October 17, 2024) – Stonehill men's soccer scored three first-half goals to upend FDU, 3-1, at University Stadium Thursday night as the Skyhawks earned their first Northeast Conference win of the season

Highlights
  • Senior Colin Milliken (Easton, Mass.) notched his team-leading fourth goal of the season and is tied for seventh in the NEC. Milliken recorded a match-high three shots on goal.
  • Junior Ryan Claffey (Colchester, Conn.) earned his first career win in net, improving to 1-2-1 on the season.
  • Junior Jared Rapoza (Somerset, Mass.) added his third goal of the season in the 38th minute as he's now one of four Skyhawks with 3+ goals.
  • Senior captain Nate Lagoa (Rehoboth, Mass.) netted his first career goal in the 43rd minute.
  • Junior Owen Burke (Holliston, Mass.) tallied his second assist of the season as he ranks third on the team with eight points.
  • Freshman Patryk Gniedziejko (Glendale, N.Y.) found his way into the box score for the first time this season as he assisted on Rapoza's goal for his first career point.
  • FDU goal scorer Kevin Leonhard scored his NEC-leading eighth goal of 2024 on a penalty kick in the 87th minute.
How it Happened
The Skyhawks opened the scoring in the 30th minute after a penalty in the box by the Knights, leading to a penalty kick for Milliken, who sent his shot right down the middle past FDU goalie Spencer King.

After a beautiful cross into the box from Gniedziejko from the right sideline, Rapoza leaped into the air as he got his head on the ball, rocketing it past King to put the Skyhawks up 2-0 in the 38th minute.

The Skyhawks' third goal of the first half came in the 43rd minute as Lagoa teed up a shot from over twenty yards out, connecting with his right foot to blast the ball into the top right corner of the net over the outstretched arms of King.

Dominic Valenzuela nearly got the Knights in the score column in the 84th minute after a loose ball off a corner kick landed at his feet, but his shot from outside the box was denied by a leaping Claffey.

Just a minute later, an FDU corner landed in the box and Jack Bejarano got his right foot on the ball while falling over to send the ball toward the bottom right corner of the goal but Claffey knocked the ball away to make his career-high fifth save of the night.

FDU got on the board in the 87th minute with a penalty kick from Kevin Leonhard after a Skyhawk penalty in the box. Leonhard's right-footed shot snuck into the bottom right corner of the net despite Claffey guessing correctly and getting a hand on the ball.
