CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (October 23, 2024) – Junior
Jared Rapoza (Somerset, Mass.) lifted Stonehill men's soccer to a 2-1 win over Harvard at Jordan Field Wednesday night in the Skyhawks' final non-conference game of the season.
Highlights
- Rapoza netted his fourth goal of the season, all four of which have been game-winners. Rapoza ranks second on the team in goals behind senior Colin Milliken (Easton, Mass.) who has six.
- Junior Shane Fonseca (Framingham, Mass.) scored for the first time this season, netting his first goal since Sept. 1, 2023, against Canisius.
- Sophomore Jaxson Kahawai (Honolulu, Hawaii) tallied his first career point, assisting on Rapoza's game-winning goal in the second half.
- Despite not starting in net since Sept. 14 against St. Thomas (MN), sophomore goalkeeper Tyler Sloan (Tallahassee, Fla.) improved to 4-2-0 on the year, recording five saves in the win.
- Stonehill finishes with a 4-5-1 record in non-conference play and improves to 4-4-0 on the road in 2024.
- The Skyhawks improved to 1-0 all-time over Harvard while picking up their first win over an Ivy League school, having lost two games to both Brown and Dartmouth since moving up to Division I in 2022.
How it Happened
Harvard scored the game's opening goal in the 17th minute after Erik Dalaker blew past the Stonehill defense up the left sideline before sending a pass to Ben Kelly whose right-footed shot ricocheted off Sloan, finding its way to the back right corner of the net.
In the 25th minute, Harvard's Dylan Tellado rocketed a right-footed shot on net from outside the 18-yard box but Sloan dove to his right, stopping the shot with his outstretched left arm to make an impressive save.
After a giveaway inside the 18-yard box by the Crimson, Fonseca pounced on the loose ball and took an uncontested shot from right in front of the goalie, rifling a right-footed shot into the bottom left corner of the net to tie the score, 1-1, in the 38th minute.
Fonseca switched the field with a long crossing pass to Kahawai, who made his way past Crimson defenders down the right sideline, centering the ball for Rapoza, who sent a left-footed shot past the dive of Cullen MacNeil for the game-winning goal in the 63rd minute.
Sloan made his fifth save in the 65th minute, while Rapoza had two more shots on goal that were both turned away by MacNeil. Neither team recorded a shot on net after the 81st minute as the Skyhawk defense secured the 2-1 win.
