Women's Soccer Battles Back to Secure 2-2 Draw at CCSU

NEW BRITAIN, Conn. (October 31, 2024) – The Stonehill College women's soccer team battled back in the second half from two goals down to secure a 2-2 draw at Central Connecticut State University in New Britain, Connecticut, Thursday night. With the decision, the Skyhawks wrap up their 2024 regular season with an overall record of 8-9-1 and 7-2-1 in Northeast Conference play, while the Blue Devils cap off the season at 5-10-2 and 5-4-1 against conference opponents.

Highlights
  • Junior Hannah Anselmo found the back of the net for her conference-leading eighth goal of the season.
  • First-year student Erin Foley scored her NEC rookie-leading sixth goal of the season.
  • Sophomore defender Lindsey Brown registered her first collegiate assist, while sophomore Grace Fitzgerald dished out her first of the season.
  • First-year goalkeeper Allie Sougaris tallied a career-high seven saves in goal for the Skyhawks.
  • Senior Daniela De Souza scored her second goal of the season, while senior Abbie Burgess netted her fourth for CCSU.
  • First-year student Leah Howe dished out two assists on the night for the Blue Devils.
  • Sophomore netminder Taylor DeFlorio posted seven saves in between the pipes for CCSU.
How it Happened
Just over five minutes into the conference matchup, Anselmo sent a cross into the six-yard goalie box, where first-year student Martha Lord waited, vying for her second goal of the season. However, DeFlorio was in the perfect position to keep Lord's header out from the back of the net.

In the 11th minute, DeFlorio denied graduate student Meghan Lord a grade-A scoring chance to keep the game scoreless once again early in the opening half.

Over the remainder of the first 45 minutes of action, Stonehill and CCSU traded shot attempts, playing to a scoreless matchup at the conclusion of the first half.

Coming out into the second half of action, the Blue Devils would take the first lead of the game when a De Souza shot off a tough angle trickled past Sougaris and into the back of the net for her second goal of the season.

At the 55:29-mark, Burgess capitalized on a perfect pass from Howe and redirect a shot into the back left corner of the Skyhawks net to put CCSU up 2-0 early in the second half.

Less than five minutes after the Blue Devils scored their second goal, Brown would boot an up-field pass to a breaking Foley, who tapped a shot past DeFlorio for her NEC rookie-leading sixth goal.

With just over 12 minutes left to play in the conference contest, Anselmo would cap off the comeback and secure the 2-2 draw for the Skyhawks after receiving a redirected pass from Fitzgerald inside the box.
